Bumblebee with dark head and white "neck."

Bumblebee with white head

Yet another "bumblebee" variation with dark markings on its tail and irregular but very attractive body markings

Bumblebee Shrimp

Scientific Name:

Caridina sp. "Bumblebee"

Size:

2.5-3.5cm

Temperature:

72°F-78°F, will not tolerate temperatures that are too high.

Food:

Algae, fish food (flake, pellets etc)

Origin:

Southern China, Hong Kong

Larval Development Type:

Completely Suppressed: Larvae assume a benthic lifestyle after hatching, i.e. they are miniature versions of the adults. There is no planktonic larval stage.

The real origin of the Bumblebee Shrimp is still shrouded in mystery. It seems to be southern China and the Hong Kong area since this shrimp is imported from there regularly.  However, that is not certain and just speculation at this point.  It is highly likely that several species, or at least several populations or subspecies, are imported as "bumblebee shrimp,", although the one in the first picture was the first one to be introduced into the hobby.  Many people confuse this shrimp with the bee shrimp, which is a completely different species of shrimp.

There is a remote possibility (not 100% confirmed) that the various shrimp sold as "bumblebee" shrimp might cross with the Crystal Red Shrimp, Tiger Shrimp and Bee Shrimp, so they should not be housed in the same aquarium to avoid possible hybrids.
