That is even simpler, but the four that molted in the 24 period in question were of varying sizes. I doubt the growth rates are that close. It could also have been an utter coincidence. I was just a little surprised to see so many sheds in the tank this morning and it got me thinking. From an ...

Molting party

Do crays in groups synchronize their molts? I ask because in the last 24 hours, four of my cajuns molted. I'm used to finding a few sheds in the tank a week, but one went early yesterday morning and three last night following a water change. I had the pleasure of witnessing it occur for my largest f...

I'm going to advise that you speak to US Fish and Wildlife. They should be able to give you the score on that. I say "should" because a year or so ago I tried importing some fish myself without the help of a broker, and I talked to two diferent people at F&W and got two different stori...

A number of fish from India are surprisingly tolerant of cool temps...might this hold true for their shrimp? Mustafa, how low have you let green shrimp go, temp-wise? I realize with those guys, it might not want to be an experiment one wants to perform, but... :)

Yes, those snails in your first pic are the ones to which I'm referring. Having dealt with them in the lab for a few years and at home for a year or so, I'm 99% certain they aren't the young of another kind of ramshorn. Unless they are some paedomrophic form, but even so, the way they carry their sh...

Saddle up!

My new batch of cherry shrimp has revealed a second definite female (and a remarkable case of growth - there were none as large as she when I received them a few weeks ago, the next largest being two almost-definite males that haven't grown since they arrived). She started showing a saddle today, so...

Well, I hadn't considered such a thing, but a small group trip might be a really neat thing. It certainly would help to have a few more hands to carry buckets and pull nets through the water! :-D As I said, I am at least 2 years away from such a trip, but will definitely let people here know about ...

Stripes inherit dominant in all Cambarellus I bred so far. So no need to wonder. If you have only mottled animals, you will only get mottled offspring. Cambarellus schmitti comes in striped and mottled, too. Thanks for that bit of info - I figured it was a simple relationship like that and was hopi...

dwarf ramshorns?

Can anyone give me an ID on the TINY ramshorns that seem to be popping up with increasing regularity in the US? They're obviously Planorbids, but they remain small - I've never seen one over 3mm, myself - and they don't seem capable of reproducing to plague levels. They hold their shells nearly para...

No, I received them from a local aquarium club member...who got them from another member of the same club, who got them off aquabid some time ago... They're identified as C. shufeldtii . I have absolutely no reason to believe otherwise. However, since mine throw only mottled phase individuals, I'm g...

Are there any obvious distinguishing characteristics between Cambarellus shufeldtii and C. schmitti? Something that can be done with the naked eye.

Sure, as soon as I have two years free. EDIT: The blue on mine is evenly spread as well. It's especially obvious in the claws. Another question for you - my stock of cajuns throws ONLY mottled individuals. What's the relationship between the mottled and the striped - is it a simple matter of o...
