Berried Sulawesi Harlequin

I've had sulawesi harlequin and cardinals for 10 weeks and just today noticed this berried Harlequin hiding in solitude. This female is one of two harlequins, so unless the other one is a male these eggs will be lost. But I'd take 50/50 odds to Vegas any day so we'll see (but please, no wagering :wi...

Re: Shrimp ID help

Thanks Mustafa. Well I'm not happy that they may need saltwater to reproduce since I was hoping they would - but maybe that's why they aren't one of the popular species. They're very colorful. My guess is they hitch rides on shipments of other shrimp species to my LFS. The manager was surprised I wa...

Shrimp ID help

Found a bunch of these shrimp in a tank at a LFS near Baltimore. He said these are the same species as snowball shrimp but wild. Doesn't look like it to me. My closest guess is indian dwarf or "rainbow"? This is the SAME shrimp: Top pic is with flash, bottom is without (true color). They a...

Nice pics. Given your location in KS that's probably Palaemonetes kadiakensis . If you can get a better pic of the carapace spines it'd help confirm/repudiate this species ident. from the USGS survey: 7 spines on top/2 on bottom (carapace "f" below) [?]. These are fun/gregarious shrimp. Ca...

Uh-oh

Found another P. paludosus with an "ulcer" today. Kinda worried :( as you can see one of my orange shrimps in the background. Not sure how helpful the low power micrograph is. Ulcer again appears at the junction of two abdominal segments. Not sure how to control this if a bacterial infecti...

Strange things afoot with my orange shrimp

The orange shrimp I bought seem to be loosing their orange hue and are having color changes. Before the orange color (picture previously in this post) was more uniform and deep on all shrimp - now its lighter, mottled and the shrimp are getting darker pigmentation. I don' think the pics I took do it...

Thanks for input. The striping in both my "Rainbow" shrimp and the Indian Whitebanded shrimp are similar. But the dorsal stripe seems more pronounced in my shrimp...perhaps related to maturity as noted in the "Shrimp Variety" page? To be honest, I'm not experienced enough to know...

Neocaridina mutt?

And as other people said...you're going to end up with a bunch of "mutts" anyway as all Neocaridina spp., that I am aware of, can interbreed. ~Mustafa (http://www.petshrimp.com/discussions/viewtopic.php?t=2672) Not to misinterpret Mustafa's quote, but I think I have three of those neocari...

Thanks - I haven't seen it on other shrimp yet. I assume the shrimp arrived with it and I missed it at an earlier stage. Interesting to hear it was on someone else's ghost shrimp. Reminds me to keep better quarantine measures - jeez.

Help ID grass shrimp ulcer/disease

I have some P. paludosus grass shrimp and one was carrying an odd-looking red ulcer on its shell for at least 3+ days since I noticed it. This shrimp seemed to behave normally and I was waiting for it to molt to see if spot went away - 'lo and behold I came home today and saw same shrimp very much d...

Speculation...

This is an interesting thread I found looking for some answers...esp. about the "mass molts" of shrimp under stress. I've noticed the same with water changes (but not sure if that's b/c I am more attentive to the tank afterwards). I read a recent article about fiddler crabs living (reasona...

I think it's a short one as far as North America goes. There's native Syncaris sp. up the west coast, Palaemonetes kadiakensis in the midwest from Texas to Canada, and other Palaemonetes east of the Mississippi/Eastern-seaboard from the Gulf of Mexico to at least New Jersey - plus Macrobrachium sp. ...

No, unfortunately my females have not berried yet (should be soon) but I'll keep an eye out for egg size/characteristics. That's the same female shrimp in the two pics. Problem is I have RCS in the same tank - not sure if those will interbreed with these orange FWS. I don't have much experience spec...

more orange shrimp

I bought orange-colored shrimp recently from my LFS - was told they were not artificially colored - bought them because the orange was so (unnaturally) vibrant - like Orange Crush or Fanta soda - if you know what I mean. I guess I'll see what their offspring look like. I'd love to know if this is a ...
