Badflash: The idea of drinking caustic soda isn't pleasant. I make up a 40 gallon batch of reconstituted RO water and test that each time. The experience of seeing a tankfull of SW fish go belly up after a water change makes you cautious forever  . I hear you about the town's attituted. When ...

Badflash: I checked my current water conditions the other day, and had 3 deg KH (I'm getting a general hardness kit this week...had to order it), and the pH is 7.4. I've never seen it that soft around here, but I live in a different part of town with a different water company now. It can change w/o ...

Badflash: OK, though I had planned to use RO water and reconstitute it to moderately hard water. Our local water system has sometimes wildly variable pH and hardness due to changes in the wells they use. The water right now has about 3 deg KH, but in the fall can be as much as 12 deg, with the pH ch...

Initial shrimp tank setup

All: I re-read the articles on setting up a shrimp tank, but didn't see the answer to this question: How long do you wait after the leaves are in the tank before introducing shrimp? I will be setting up a 20 gallon shrimp-only next week (you were right, Badflash; I've been converted to the invertebr...

Neon:

That has been my understanding, which is true of many creatures. As a better understanding of the animals is made, sometimes the names are changed. Many creatures look the same, but end up being entirely different genetically.

Bad: Yes, that was my next question: Why are the amanos and the greens in the same genera given their different reproductive sequence? I seems to me that if they have physically zero chance of crossing, they have little or zero chance of being in the same genera. I was wondering about the thought pr...

I should probably start another thread, but perhaps this won't go far... I notice that you have two different genera, and that the two shrimp of the same genera have different life-cycles. Is that intentional? I think I read here that you should avoid two shrimp of similar species in the same tank, ...

I understand. What size tank is this, and how many of each shrimp are in there?

Bad:

Now THAT's interesting; that one species may inhibit the population of another by its mere presence, not predation. I knew that the size of individuals could be affected by overcrowding, but not numbers.

Thanks!

Neon: I'll keep watching. Badflash: Is the overcrowding species-specific or simply increased numbers of all shrimps? I noticed that most people don't keep more than one species in the same tank, so perhaps that question is moot. I figured that there is some method of population control. The shrimp's...

Neon: Thanks. I know I've learned a great deal, on several levels. I did check the net for information concerning gender percentages, but if there is any such information, I haven't looked in the right places. I thought that perhaps hobbyists had noticed that they grew a proponderance of males or fe...

I went back through the previous posts on this site, and read enough that I have eye-strain. I can see now why Badflash made the statements to me as he did. I would be frustrated with me, too. To bring this thread back to its title, does anyone know of any controlled studies as to gender percentages...

Bad: Thanks for the message. I'm sorry that you thought I was ignoring your advice, or that of others. I was just trying to gain a better understanding of how my own experiences in the light of the information and advice here. My experience is quite limited (one set of shrimp in one tank, and the sh...

Mustafa: I hadn't intended coming back, but you and S+S had been so kind and helpful that I wanted to thank you personally. I did read all of the required reading, and had found that most or all of the shrimp were not compatible with most fish in one way or another (fish against the shrimp, or shrim...
