Yeah, I keep a very close eye on the phosphates-- nitrates are never an issue, but we do see a occasional spike in phosphates in our tap water here, so I always check the levels and put phosphate sponges in the filter if need be. Also, our city water comes from an untreated large lake in the Canadia...

Thanks, that answers my question. I've picked off most of it (fortunately, it was on the anubias right near the water's surface), and will continue the minimal lighting routine as well as having already resumed the biweekly water freshening... I know unwelcome algae's always a sign of too many nutri...

hair algae: butterfly goodedi ok to add temporarily?

I seem to have a blooming crop of hair algae in my cherry shrimp tank, and the little guys aren't keeping pace with the food supply increase. I'm reducing lighting, but wondered if I might briefly introduce a butterfly goodeid or two-- strictly algae-eating little fish-- just to tame the infestation...

I'm still working on getting in focus shots of the shrimp, which are about twenty times bigger than these li'l guys! But when the mystery fish get big enough, I'll try...

Okay, since they haven't shown any interest in anything but the algae, I'll let them be until they are a bit bigger, and then maybe I'll be able to figure out what they are!

puzzling new inhabitants...

My RCS shrimp tank is humming along nicely, with the addition of some new stock I got from another hobbyist in my city, along with a very big handful of Christmas moss, which I'd been looking for unsuccessfully for ages. There's an assortment of generations, with some very little guys, berried femal...

Heavy cover and planting would probably do them best. My vampire shrimp, when in my 80 gallon, went to live in my box filter between the inserts-- needless to say I had to be very careful when changing them! I moved it to my ten gallon shrimp tank, where he promptly disappeared into a big piece of g...

I think also the problem with black hair algae that arises is not directly, but indirectly because of low CO2. When CO2 is too low, more complex plants cannot effectively utilize the nutrients in the water, but the algae can and does. When CO2 is brought into better balance with the nutrients (eithe...
