They're most definitely trying to eat them! Since you already have them together, I would recommend providing the shrimp with plenty of cover if you can't keep them in separate tanks.

That's new to me, though it sounds nice for a barbeque recipe; garlic shrimp or salmon steaks with garlic.
I wouldn't dream of trying it personally.

I'm using Novo Shrimp as well. Have been for quite a while and find that the shrimp love them. I sprinkle them over an area of long Jave Moss in my community aquarium, where they sink quite well into the moss. After a few hours of washing and picking some unwanted guests (mostly snails), I've put the plant into the tank. Did the snails that you picked off the plant appear healthy?
