They're most definitely trying to eat them! Since you already have them together, I would recommend providing the shrimp with plenty of cover if you can't keep them in separate tanks.

After a few hours of washing and picking some unwanted guests (mostly snails), I've put the plant into the tank. Did the snails that you picked off the plant appear healthy?
