--Keep in mind that rivers are not a closed system like an aquarium. Compared to the tremendous amounts of water flowing even through the smallest creeks the number of crypts growing in them is insignificant and won't effect water quality perceptibly if at all. Excellent point. My tank was long est...

(Now that I remember....Brad...didn't you have Crypts in your Red Cherry tank? That might have been the reason why your Cherries died instead of the hurricane and the resulting loss of power causing their death...again...just my hypothesis. Too bad I did not know this information back then, otherwi...

Red Claw

Mustafa,

Since you added Red Claws to the Shrimp Varieties Page, I will begin the interrogation. How long are their claws? In my opinion, some Macrobrachium's claws are aestheticly too large -- they don't seem to be in proportion to the body.

I will skip the standard question.

Re: Japanese Marimo Ball? Food?

It is algae. will this make a good food source for chrrys, tigers, and red fronts? It will be a good food source, but not in the way you are thinking. It is likely that the alg...

as far as i can tell, the eggs are outside the body of the shrimp on its swimmerettes, which are hidden under the "abdomen" and clearly visible. This is correct. The carapace of female shrimp extends down past the fleshy part of her tail to help protect the eggs. This can create the illus...

Re: cherry shrimp: frequency of water changes?

I read a thread from a person who never changes the water in the tank, but only adds water as it evaporates. That's me. I don't recommend it for everyone. Does this work? So far, it has worked for my ghosts. I do not currently have cherries, but I imagine it would work for them too. I was planning ...

Ghosts are one of the harder freshwater shrimps to breed. The larvae are very small and require extremely fine food. There is a good chance that they will starve before becoming little shrimp. Mine feed on an established population of infusoria in their tank. They can be feed well-ground (think mort...

It is implicit in the statement
Larval Development Type:
Completely Suppressed: Larvae assume a benthic lifestyle after hatching, i.e. they are miniature versions of the adults. There is no planktonic larval stage.
Any shrimp that lacks a planktonic stage is a true freshwater shrimp.
