Re: First Tank
Very nice tank. 20 gallon? 55 seems cold. Hate for you to use a heater but better than heating the whole house. My thermostat is set to 62 by the house rarely gets that cold. As Varanus stated add the snails and algae now. How many shrimp were you considering to buy? At least 20. Any less with all y...

Re: Female with eggs...but no male
Very interesting. We could speculate that females store sperm. Or may be she would produce males that she could mate with thus starting a new colony. That and their long life would make them a great colonizer species.

Re: Breeding Alpha Opae Ula (Metabetaeus lohena)
I had the same question about brackish vs full salt. It was explained to me that the larvae would float out to sea and return. There are I believe two other species with M. minutus being very similar to M. lohena and found in ankialine pools. Also M. lohena was found on Easter island. Research sugge...

Re: Breeding Alpha Opae Ula (Metabetaeus lohena)
I placed the larvae in full salt water. I would have to check but I believed they all died within a day in brackish water. Also I believe the M. lohena adults would eat the larvae. They have pincers that the H. rubra do not. I would surmise they would eat the larvae if given a chance. I have found t...

Re: Do I have a problem? Don't see baby shrimp in tank #2
What I have found is that newly metamorphosed shrimp stay visible for a couple days then they seem to disappear for a few weeks. After that they act like adults and are stay in the open.

Re: Breeding Alpha Opae Ula (Metabetaeus lohena)
I still have the shrimp. They are definitely cool shrimp but hide all the time. They will come out when being feed and they seem more active at night. They seem as hardy as the opae ula. I tried the 'green water' several times to no avail. I guess they need larger food. I bought powdered food 100 mi...

Re: Breeding Alpha Opae Ula (Metabetaeus lohena)
I have tried to breed these shrimp. Getting them to berry is a snap. Then comes the difficulties. They are lower order shrimp. Their larvae go through several stages. My issue has been feeding them. I have some posts on this site if you search.

Re: nearly 1 year Old Tank with lots of Green Algae is this normal?
Looks like blue green algae. One of my tanks have it. I physically remove it being careful not to through out any shrimp. No idea why it is there but I am having trouble removing it permanently.

Re: Supershrimp preparation questions
Glad you are taking the plunge. I am not sure but I believe Suesswassertang is best in fresh water. Patience is best. I would wait a month to two months.

Re: My first berried shrimp!
It is unknown to me why but it does seem the first berried shrimp in a new tank drops all or most of her eggs. It has happened to me also. I would not let it concern you but it is disappointing.

Re: Can they be acclimated to fresh water?
Mm there are three basic tanks. Fish, shrimp and planted. Fish tanks have as the focal point, fish. Some plants often fake and other decorations are added that enhance the fish. Fish reproduction is not primary. Community fish tank. Snail added for algae clean up. Shrimp tanks have moss or some slow...

Re: Can they be acclimated to fresh water?
Mr mite. I believe it is possible for them to survive in fresh water but thrive i am not sure. I would say no. Why would you? There are so many fresh water shrimp available and red at that. This shrimp fills a niche, the perfect desk top pet.
