Leaf Litter (oak) not staying on bottom

Hi guys, I renovated my tank to create a closer habitat to what I've read on here for my cherries. I removed all plants and soaked some oak leaves for a leaf litter bottom but my problem is even after 2 weeks the leaves are not sitting on the bottom. I have quite a bit of flow from the HOB filter an...

Female cherry shrimp less hardy than males?

Hi Everyone,

I've had some recent cherry deaths and they seem to be only occurring to my beautiful dark red cherry females while the males seem to be doing fine. Is there any science behind this observation or just the luck of the draw?

Thanks

Re: My Bamboo shrimp escape story

One other thought I had was to add a bit to the Shrimp Varieties page on the Asian Filter Shrimp. I had no idea until after losing it that they are known escape artists. Mustafa, is it possible for you to update the info page to mention this?

Thanks

My Bamboo shrimp escape story

So my cherry shrimp tank has been doing ok since I made some drastic changes. Been going on 2 weeks now with no deaths and seemingly happy shrimp. I decided I wanted a centerpiece for the 10 gallon and found out our local Petco carries asian filter shrimp (bamboo). I went and they looked great. Not ...

Re: Move plant from medicated tank to Cherry Shrimp tank?

I would be careful with not soaking for a while first. Some nutrients (and thus possibly chemicals) are transportable throughout the tissues of the plant, while others are not. What this means is some chemicals may be CONCENTRATED at the new growth areas though most likely they will be "trapped...

Re: A Question, yes I read the FAQ

Wow this forum is getting scarce!

See my other post in the thread titled "Ich Attack". You don't need salt (it marginally helps during treatment), but with inverts I'd recommend against dosing it.

Re: Ich Attack

While this sounds like an advertisement for a product I'll bite. The best medication for Ich is heat. The only thing medications do is help to kill the free-swimming stage of the Ich organism. During the other life-cycles there is no benefit. With that said slowly raising the tank temperature to >87...

Re: Move plant from medicated tank to Cherry Shrimp tank?

I would first move the plants to a separate tank/bucket for a couple weeks changing out the water frequently with fresh tap water. This would help to insure that any toxins that possibly got absorbed into the tissue of the plants has had time to dissipate.

Re: Ghost shrimp, cherry predators?!?

Well it's been awhile, but finally I got another batch of cherries from a local breeder. I got a dozen, did the slow acclimation period and since the addition on Friday have only physically seen one dead (could have been 1 of the 2 ghosts as it was just a small piece of a shrimp left). Since my last...

Re: Ghost shrimp, cherry predators?!?

Well as I mentioned the Petsmart tank that I got this last batch from was less then ideal (dead frogs in the tank), but shrimp seem to be so fragile that they die off extremely quickly in the presence of toxic conditions. I'm not concerned that much about the ghost death, but I will be if my next ch...

Re: Ghost shrimp, cherry predators?!?

Have you tried a copper test ,could be lots of trace metals from those pipes. just another thing you can rule out if u test it . good luck Nope, haven't done a copper test. I've switched out the water from work to home and my home water is fine. I have no substrate in the tank so I don't know how m...

Re: Ghost shrimp, cherry predators?!?

What worries me a bit is the changing the whole water part. Are you sure the tank is well established? Hi Fishbone, This tank has been established (and fully cycled) for years. I used to have a dwarf puffer that lived to a nice ripe old age. After that I decided to go invertebrate only (because it'...

Re: Ghost shrimp, cherry predators?!?

Well I've made another attempt at housing inverts as I picked up a dozen ghost shrimp from Petsmart again. After all the problems I've completely changed the water in my 10-gallon tank (removed all traces of work water and have been carting my water from home, which also should be similar to the wat...

Re: Keeping a shrimpless tank

I don't quite understand your question. Do you mean you have a tank setup but NOTHING is in the tank right now? (ie no fish or inverts) If there is nothing in the tank and you are not feeding the empty tank consistently you likely have little/no beneficial bacteria and thus any shrimp you add will l...

Re: Ghost shrimp, cherry predators?!?

Fishbone, Ghost shrimp were purchased several weeks before the cherry shrimp. The cherry shrimp were fine in the tank for 2+ weeks. The problem seemed to occur after a water change and light feeding (it was the day before Thanksgiving and I wanted to ensure they had good conditions prior to the long...
