Re: Simply try out another tank

Here are two pictures of the thick mats that cover everything. One is green and from a freshwater tank...the other red from a saltwater tank:

Re: Simply try out another tank

Of course there isn't much left, but that doesn't look like cyanobacteria but some type of brown algae to me. Cyanobacteria tend to grow in carpets and then peel off your substrate and walls of the tank in one large piece.

Re: Over a dozen dead larvae; new heater to blame?

If you keep seeing dead shrimp go ahead and make an immediate 80-90 percent water change. And take the heater out. Then leave things alone. No matter what the reason for the deaths the water change should fix it as obviously something is in the water that's killing them.

Re: "Planted" supershrimp tank

Thanks for the extensive and detailed report! :) (And yes, I know you remember the deal. :) I'm in no rush anyway, so it'll happen when things warm up a bit).

Do you have any pictures of the Potamopyrgus antipodarum in your tank?

Re: An alga parasiting (only?) freshwater shrimps

Hmmm....I kinda remember that thread. I thought it was some debris stuck in their swimmerets. I guess we'll never find out as the pics are gone. :(

Re: Simply try out another tank

The problem is that nerites don't eat cyanobacteria. Most things don't eat cyanobacteria You need the "brackish water snails", either Melanoides tuberculata or Tarebia granifera. The snails and the shrimp will take care of things after a few weeks to months.

Re: An alga parasiting (only?) freshwater shrimps

Thanks for the post! So that's what it is...a type of algae. I've never seen any disease or parasite on Supershrimp, though, so I'd be interested in where you actually saw this parasite on them. The freshwater forum has been closed to new posts for months due to the fact that our focus here has beco...

Can't go wrong with snails. I have them in every tank I own.

Re: New tank here we go!

Thanks for the updates! Just one thing..if that "mossball"/algaeball is from me, it's *not* a marimo ball. It's a different species/type of algae ball. Just want to avoid some confusion for future forum members that will be reading this thread.

Re: Limit lighting to control algae?

I wouldn't limit the lighting. Food is the only thing to limit or to stop giving for algae control. Other than that I'd just clean the front "glass" (if it's even glass) and enjoy the shrimp. The algae won't harm them.

Re: New Shrimp Mom

Is there a way to encourage algae growth? Or to start it? I’m eager to get these shrimp in their new tank. Hehe! No. Just have patience and it'll happen sooner or later. If you overthink it and start doing things more likely than not you're going to negatively affect things. And turn off that filte...

Re: Using mineral rock from sungrow ?

Absolutely not necessary...neither of these products does any good for these shrimp. Don't overthink it...just leave the tank alone (stop buying "products" and changing things) and read all the info on this website.

Re: Question about brown algae and seeding with green algae

As I've said in your other thread the bubbles mean that you're most likely overfeeding. Cut down to once every 2-3 weeks or longer, or just stop feeding altogether for now. Brown algae don't turn into green algae either...they are different things. You'll get more green algae at some point. If you w...

Re: First Molt

I did notice that some of them were carrying around some of the suspended debris. I wonder if this had anything to do with the molt? This has nothing to do with the molt. They are just eating the algae/biofilm you cleaned off the glass/tank wall. Yes, they do like to hold larger pieces and swim aro...

Re: Over a dozen dead larvae; new heater to blame?

You don't just have dead larvae in there, you have dead shrimp too. Are you sure the heater is the only thing you changed? Have you been feeding more recently, or just a lot the entire time? Any new decoration? Having said that...as I have written in another thread, unless your temps go down to the ...
