Re: Plants, Plankton for halocaridina rubra?

Just want to add my 2 cents in here.

I have tried adding Java Moss in the tank - they don't die right away, but they don't last either - after 5-6 month, they all died.

besides Mangroves, I'm not sure there is much option for plant

Opae Ula - Making them more Redish ?

I was wondering if anyone knows how to make my Opae Ula more red - from the on-line pictures that I saw of the Opae Ula in the wild, they are dark red. Where as my Opae are more of a lighter pink. A little more information about my tank -Had it over 5 years now (very stable community - that reproduc...

Re: Halocaridina rubra care

Majority of what people said are correct. Here's my experience 20 Gallon Tank. 3 Lava Rocks from (Petco), and a home made sponge filter. Started with about 50 Opae Shrimps about 3 year ago, now have about 200-400 (estimate). I use to do regular water changes, but have stopped for over a year. I only...

Yes, I'm thinking about getting another tank for my little Opae Shrimps... something in the neighborhood of 55 Gallons.... Just love these little guys cuz I can put in 2% effort and still have them thriving. Thanks fo...

Fresh Water to Salt Water (Need to Re-Cycle ?)

Got a quick question for you all knowledgeable people.

If I were to cycle a fresh water tank, is it possible for me to
Turn it into a salt water tank and not kill the Beneficial Bacteria’s ?

Or will I need to Cycle the tank again ?

Lava Rocks

Ernopena: If you ever find any let me know, I would like to iminate their natural habitat for my shrimps also. It's true what Mustafa said, don't think the shrimps really need it, as I subsituted it with coral rocks from Petco, and mine shrimps seem to be just fine...reproducing like crazy thou Look...

Heatwave

Last week, there was a heat wave in my neighborhood, and the tempurature in my tank went over 90+ (the little tempurature gauge only goes up to 90) and it was at 90, so I'm thinking it went over since it was like 100-104 in the valley. Anyways, I was surprised that the little opae shrimps were not a...

Talk about Easy

Yeap, these are probably the easiest shrimps that one can find in this hobby. It's been a while since I updated, but my 20 gallon tank is doing extremely well...so well that I'm thinking about getting a bigger tank (50 gallon) for them.....since it is getting crowded... I think I might have over 200...

Congrats Frugalfish: As Mustafa have stated, your salinity might be a tad bit low. This is the parameters for my tank Salinity = 1.10 to 1.14 Temp 76-82 besides that I don't test anything else, I had my tank for a little over a year now, and I have seen many larvae during this time, just recently no...

Opae lost of color (Add iodine & calcium ??)

I just noiced that a lot of my little hawaiian opae have lost their rich RED color, and I read that adding a little iodine and calcium drops will help.

Just want to make sure this is true and that it won't harm my shrimps.

My Experience

My experience with the shrimps are pretty good. They are super easy to take care of, just a occasional feeding and water change nothing more than that. A) No filter / Airation B) I do have a heater, but rarely uses it, I try to keep the water around 78 degrees....my tank fluxuates from low of 72 (wi...

Many would tell you to search the forum, but I'll make it easy for you and give you all the answers 1) Brackish Water = Half Salt Water, Half Fresh Water. You can basically mix your own by adding half sea water and half fresh water or use Instand Ocean Salt Mix. You might want to get a Hydrometer to...

Personally, I envy that you have that much algae..

I think the amount of algae you have is fine.

I have seen tanks where you can barely see and the shrimps still do fine.
