Re: Moving my 1 Gallon to a 5 Gallon
Thanks both, appreciate the input. How about EcoBio rocks and/or Dyed coral? Anybody ever have issues with either of those? I'm getting some natural dyed coral with what's touted as aquarium safe epoxy based dye, but it seems a waste if it doesn't both leech beneficial trace elements and still act a...

Moving my 1 Gallon to a 5 Gallon
I've decided I want to give my shrimp (+ snails and one dwarf hermit) some more room to move around. Haven't seen any new berried shrimp for the last 6-8 months. I'm going to start cycling my new 5.5 gallon (static, no filter or lights) tank over the course of this next week. I plan to give that a l...

Re: Dwarf Hermit Crab
I have one I purchased advertised as a Hawaiian left-handed Dwarf that exists with Opae in the wild in Brackish water. He's about the size of a kidney-bean with the shell included, had no problem just plopping him into the water. But the species I got must not be listed correctly, since the Dwarf He...

Re: Bioluminescent dinoflagellates and Opae Ula?
Go to you lfs and have them test the nutrient solution. If they have salt water fish and corals they will use a Refractometer. It only uses a couple drops. That's a good idea, I may give that a shot. These are Phytoplankton, no? Wouldnt tiny shrimp like Opae Ula gobble them up? I would count on tha...

Re: Bioluminescent dinoflagellates and Opae Ula?
Sent you the link Jonesinfershrimp, didn't want to post on the forum. Kenp: it's definitely not a vibrant glow all the time or for very long. But late at night, if I only lightly jostle the cabinet mine sits on top of there are definitely some swirls, or small pulses. So if there was constant moveme...

Bioluminescent dinoflagellates and Opae Ula?
So here's an idea. Over the holidays I got one of those biopop Dinoflagellate aquariums; they're a bioluminescent kind that if you leave in the dark at night you can shake up and they glow for a bit. Has anybody ever kept these in a brackish tank with super shrimp? I'm not sure what the salinity tol...

Re: Question about egg clutch
Do eggs that are dropped ever hatch? I've had a berried female for the past two weeks or so; she started out with about a dozen and over time has gone down to about a half dozen. This is pretty standard for my one gallon, when they do breed it's usually no more than 3-4 new larvae at a time. In this...

Re: Brackish moss balls
Would something have eaten it? The hermit crab maybe? There's a possibility it also got moved under my barnacle or is stuffed into one of the shells, I'm definitely not seeing it anywhere in the open and there aren't a whole lot of places it could be secreted away.

Re: Brackish moss balls
So I've been away from my 1-gallon bowl for about two months. Co-workers fed them occasionally while I was gone. But I just noticed that my brackish moss ball is gone! I assume it didn't survive and must've melted away. When I first put it in there, it got a bit more "spikey" as shrimp pic...

Re: Problem with micro algae dying - Copepods to blame?
I echo Ken; I had my algae for a time, but my bowl was very small and it was a pale green that limped down and never seemed to grow. I bought a hermit and poured the water in, and suddenly noticed copepods in my water too. Within a couple of weeks, the algae went from limp to pale white and then com...

Hermit crab ate the other one; feed more?
So for over a year I had a hermit crab billed as a "Hawaiian Dwarf Hermit" in my 1-gallon with my 40-50 supershrimp (they've bred at least a half dozen time so not sure how many are in there now), and he's pretty interesting to watch. Small, maybe half an inch across. But his stripes are m...

TRIBBLES!!
Looking forward to them being up for sale. I'm always eager to have some plant-life in my 1-gallon, the space is so small I worry about the nitrate buildup in all the accumulated shrimp waste.

Temperature Fluctuations in Bowl - Should I get a heater?
In my new office, my 1-gallon bowl sits right by my window and when I come in in the morning the shrimp seem super happy with the warm sun shining in. They're at their most red, and wander around liberally but not frantically. My (now two) hermit crabs are also very active, as are the snails. I thin...

Re: Should I churn up my substrate or leave it be?
The outfit I ordered them from calls them "Hawaiian Dwarf Hairy Leg Hermit Crabs", not sure if that's the same as Hawaiian Zebra Leg hermit crabs, these guys don't have the large claws.
I have a 1-gallon stagnant bowl, no filtration, no aeration.

Re: Should I churn up my substrate or leave it be?
Right on, can't wait for the new algae balls to be on the site, looking forward to giving those a shot. So last week I was reading up on my dwarf hermit crab (soon to be 2) and I noticed it said they enjoy not just company, but sandy substrate to dig into and hide. My substrate has always been rocky...
