Re: Should I churn up my substrate or leave it be?
Thanks for the response Mustafa, right on, I'll leave them be. The shrimp still enjoy picking up what strands are in there and swimming around with them. If the environment is conducive to the Chaeto growing, I hope it will. Another shrimp berried last night, so they definitely seem to be enjoying t...

Re: Should I churn up my substrate or leave it be?
Another question on the Chaeto; I find it interesting that so many people have problems with the various algae growing out of control. Of two original golf-ball sized bunches I got of the Chaetomoropha from Mustafa and finer "angel hair" algae from another outfit, only a few strands of the...

Should I churn up my substrate or leave it be?
I've had my 1-gallon bowl for about 2 years now, and for the past year the shrimp have been breeding pretty frequently. There's almost always been a berried shrimp in there since, and lots of little larvae to juveniles. I also have the snails I got from Mustafa, and a mini-hermit crab. The Chaeto ne...

That's quite a discount they're offering on those rocks.

Re: Cloudy Water
When my bowl got cloudy within the first month of cycling, it was due to a bacterial bloom. Smelled funky too. Cleared up in a week or two, you can try waiting to see if that happens. I wouldn't put the shrimp in until it clears up, though mine survived the process, my first set of snails didn't liv...

Re: Finally! A Berried Shrimp!
Well, Over the course of the last few months, I've had three berried shrimp, they dropped almost all their eggs, but last week I finally saw my first larvae. A successful birth! There's even two new berried shrimp as well, we'll see how many eggs they keep. http://i.imgur.com/wFrpz4x.jpg Two other i...

Re: Finally! A Berried Shrimp!
So far so good, she's still holding on to her eggs. My heart actually sank when I came in on Monday because at first I thought she was down to only 2. But then I noticed that it was a completely different shrimp that had also berried. Odd for it to be only 2 eggs I suppose, but the other one still h...

Re: Finally! A Berried Shrimp!
So after the tragedy of my first berried shrimp dropping all of their eggs, I've come back to the office after the weekend and found another berried shrimp. That's great to see, but I have a question: Should I continue to feed them (between once a week to once every two weeks)? I usually drop a sing...

Re: Finally! A Berried Shrimp!
Sad news, just checked in on her this morning and looks like she's kicked off almost all of her eggs. There's only one left right under her body, there's a couple that seem to be hanging on by an invisible thread, she keeps kicking all of her legs as if to free them. So the assumption is, if they do...

Finally! A Berried Shrimp!
I've had the bowl since November of 2012 I believe, so it took over a year and I've finally spotted my first berried shrimp. Look to be about 6-7 eggs. Exciting! Hope nothing happens to her over the weekend.

Is my macroalgae dead?
When I first got the algae over a year ago, it was a lighter green, very robust looking, and covered a huge area. Now it's mostly dark green with a lot of the strips white/whitening, and has settled into a clump near the bottom of the bowl. Is it dead? Should I take it out of there? http://i.imgur.c...

Re: Opae Ula Freshwater Life Span
This is like asking how long a person lives without oxygen. It's sick frankly, they won't 'live' so much as survive for a time. If it's not worth the effort for you to give them a proper living space, give them to someone who does.

Re: Coworkers overfed Opae
Thinking about it some more, maybe instead of a water change I'll take the opportunity to move them to a bigger tank. I've had this 1-gallon for almost a full year now, and there's never been any breeding, though when they blanche themselves I can see several have saddles full of eggs. I'd like to g...

Re: Coworkers overfed Opae
Ach, bummer, OK. Thanks guys for the input, I'll have to look up on the site how to handle the water change. It's such a small bowl that pretty much anything I do to it really freaks them out. I'll try and upload a picture so you guys can chime in on how it looks, maybe it's not so bad and I'm overr...

Coworkers overfed Opae
I just got back from a four month trip and I can see that my co-workers got very overzealous in feeding my Opae. The 1-gallon bowl has had a very large amount of algae growth, the surface is covered in dark green patches as well as a thin film on the inside of the bowl. That doesn't concern me so mu...
