Thanks for the information guys! :-D I'm going to try and increase the hardness of the water and hopefully that will help, but if not I will try bottled water. I don't think it's an actual water problem because my water is so soft it really doesn't have much of anything in it, I think the crays just...

Thanks Amanda, I have been feeding them flakes, algae wafers, spinach and bloodworms. I usually give them bloodworms every two or three days because they like those the best. I think I have seen some fertilized eggs in with the unfertilized ones, but there are only a few and they seem to drop them. ...

As of today I am down to one pair from three. The females have been carrying eggs, but I don't think any have been fertilized because they seem to drop them after about a week. The problem that I'm having is that they keep dying right before or right after moulting. I just had a female die in ...

Hi Craig,

The crays show up on Aquabid occasionally and shipping to Canada is possible if you're willing to pay for it, but I just went across the border and picked them up over there.

I just got mine recently so haven't had any babies yet, hopefully soon!

I have some Mexican Dwarfs in the same tank as adult tiger shrimp and I haven't had any problems with shrimps being killed, but the crays definitely harass them. When I first put the shrimp in the tank they would spend most of their time on the ground, but now they have taken to living on the rocks ...

Congratulations Josh, but are you sure they are cherry babies? When I see cherry babies they look like tiny shrimp, they're small, but you can definitely tell they are shrimp-shaped. Also, it usually takes about a month for the eggs to hatch and you posted that you had eggs about two weeks ago, that...

Baby Crays

Question for all you cray keepers...

I have been reading that cray babies hatch and then cling to their mother's pleopods for another week. Do they eat during this time and leave their mom and come back or do they stay on the pleopods the whole time? Thanks!

I just found a store in Vancouver that says they sell raw bamboo :D so I'm going to give them a try. Some questions though... what kind of diameter should I try and get for the hole? How long of a piece do I cut? And, this may be a dumb question, but do the crays like the cave to have one door or tw...

Thanks Ed, You must have cut down a HUGE stalk because I just got one from my yard and it's not hollow enough in the center for a cray to fit inside. I might try to hollow it out a little. You said it needs to be dried and cured, how do you cure it? What happens if you just put it in the tank and do...

Hi all, I noticed that the crayfish article says you can use "short segments of waterlogged bamboo" as caves for these crays. Has anyone tried this? Where did you get the bamboo? I haven't seen any available in pet stores and I'm a little apprehensive about buying it elsewhere in case it's...

Thanks for all the great information! :-D I have had this problem off and on for a year and I know it's because my discus are really messy eaters. It's a fairly well planted tank and they eat the beefheart mix and spit the little pieces all over the tank. They won't eat anything else except bloodwor...

Bamboo shrimp for green water?

Hi guys, I have a 77 gal tank with a serious green water problem and I'm wondering if anyone has ever used Bamboo Shrimp to get rid of green water. Do you think they eat enough to make an impact? I was thinking of getting some golden clams (Corbicula fluminea), but I'm too scared that they will over...

There has been quite a bit of discussion on these boards about this subject already, but I'll give a quick synopsis. Iodine is completely necessary for the growth and development of saltwater invertebrates. It is a component of ocean water and, therefore, is necessary to have in a saltwater tank. Th...

Hi Josh, There isn't any evidence that iodine helps freshwater shrimp so I don't use it and my shrimp are fine, but if you want to use it then don't use the same dosing that the bottle suggests because that's for salt water. I have heard that Frank Greco from Frank's Aquarium uses (or used to use) o...
