Re: Do the shrimp eat the macro-algae?

Thanks so much, Mustafa! I admit I worry about the little guys. They were super active when I first put them in, but now they like to hide under the shells at the back, and none of them have gone red again. I'm only seeing three at a time. Just want to make sure they're ok and everything is to thei...

Re: Anchialine pool biotope tank thoughts.

What size tank should I set up for a breeding tank, and how big a population should I introduce when I get it set up? If my girls are saddling up now and they reproduce, I might be able to seed one... if it's going to be a smallish one. Or you know, buy more shrimp from you. (: - Mel PS: Recommendat...

Re: Ecosphere

Switched them over-- deep breaths! One is doing something funny with its leg, but I'm hoping it isn't broken, and I'm hoping they all will be ok. Had to rush the process due to new leadership coming into the office very soon, but am hoping the Ecosphere had the requisite bacteria &c. I put all ...

Re: Saddles / Berried

Mustafa might have better ideas, but maybe try cutting the feeding to once every two weeks instead of once a week? It's his timing recommendation, and I'm kind of a newbie myself, but I suspect that's the first bit of advice he'd give. Some folks also think that they might like a cranny to hide in w...

Re: What to feed these little ones??

My opae have been in the tank now for one week. I have not feed them but am concerned that there is not enough micro organisms in the tank for food. Unlike others who have posted, I have NOT noticed any shrimp waste in the tank. The shrimp are still clear white and four or five can be seen out in t...

Re: Ammonia still high after 4.5 weeks

The brown fuzzy stuff is diatoms, and after the diatoms come green algae, so things are cycling on track, but not done cycling.

Re: The New Supershrimp Owner Experience. (Long post!)

It's been over a month, and the tank has settled nicely. No babies, but an interesting discovery or two. Firstly, the shrimp that I had supposed to be yellow colored up to an orangey-red. When it gets startled it reverts back to white, and then colors up to yellow before it gets orange and red again...

Re: New Tank: Nitrite at 0.25 ppm

Update: My shrimp, snails, and macroalgae arrived Thursday! They were packaged like Mel's were (but no Chinese paper). :D My tank really is not big enough to "acclimate" them by putting the bag in and letting the water mix. I have a 1.2 gallon "modern betta bowl" from PetSmart. ...

Anchialine pool biotope tank thoughts.

I'm the kind of person who takes wiki walks on a regular basis - other people watch Game of Thrones, I'm reading about obscure things. Quirk of mine, I guess. A recent video I linked to in another post got me wondering on the feasibility of setting up an anchialine pool biotope tank, which led to on...

Re: New Tank: Nitrite at 0.25 ppm

Hang in there with the waiting. When I was waiting to get my shrimplings in the mail it was like I was waiting for someone I knew and loved to give birth.

Re: YELLOW Supershrimp!!!

One of my Opae is starting to color up, and it's turning not red, but... yellow. Mustafa, I think you might have given me a discounted yellow shrimp. (: That's entirely possible. Since most of the shrimp turn pale when I start catching them, it's possible that I catch yellow or white shrimp (or wha...

Re: New Tank: Nitrite at 0.25 ppm

The macroalgae and snails should be able to sort it out quite well. Just take a raincheck on feeding the shrimp until the water chemistry calms down some. I put my shrimp in the same time as the snails and algae, and now I've got diatoms and algae growing on my reef rock about four weeks in, and the...

Re: The New Supershrimp Owner Experience. (Long post!)

It's been nearly four weeks since the shrimp arrived in their nicely padded box, and I have good news to report. A faint greenish tinge has started appearing here and there on the reef rocks I use in the tank, which means now that the diatoms have established themselves, the algae has started growin...

Re: The New Supershrimp Owner Experience. (Long post!)

I was also thinking how fun a shrimp cam would be too but having an imac the choices of network cameras are limiting for us Apple people. If anyone could suggest a good one that runs on the Apple platform that would be great. I'm also an Apple user, but I'm normally pretty privacy-obsessed, so the ...

Re: The New Supershrimp Owner Experience. (Long post!)

MelWong: Thank you for your informative posts! Great ideas and beautiful tank! I love the tiny Fluval Spec tanks with the caveat that the filter compartment should just be removed for any h.rubra tank, and for other shrimp and fish, well, make sure to put a sponge prefilter over the feed slot (sili...
