Re: Milky Grey/White Substance in Gravel

Just the beginning of the week, I notice in the bottom of the cup of gravel, there is this milky gel looking substance that seems to be suddenly growing. The substance is milky grey/white in color, and it's only at the very bottom of the cup of gravel and is visible on 2 sides of the square. This d...

Re: YELLOW Supershrimp!!!

One of my Opae is starting to color up, and it's turning not red, but... yellow.

Mustafa, I think you might have given me a discounted yellow shrimp. (:

Re: The New Supershrimp Owner Experience. (Long post!)

I've another good sign in my tank. The tiny brown dots characteristic of diatom growth have become visible to the unassisted human eye, which means that if I keep things steady and don't overfeed the green algae should follow, which means the cycle is proceeding as expected. The shrimp have gotten v...

Re: Jelly fish in my tank?

I uh, I have absolutely no idea what it is, but it is interesting. Maybe Mustafa might have an answer after he gets back from his vacation.

Re: Ecosphere

Bare hands isn't going to hurt anything if you're worried about the shrimp. The bacterial culture in the water will deal with whatever bacteria you've got on your skin. Just wash them before and after. As for anaerobic pockets, that generally occurs I think more with larger tanks, but I've found the...

Re: Feeding frenzy!

My own shrimp react more like a rugby game when I fed them Thursday, perhaps because I use pellet food. One pellet goes in, one shrimp grabs it and swims around, nibbling at it while the others try to catch up and grab the pellet for themselves. Although your own frenzy could be said to be a nice ru...

Re: The New Supershrimp Owner Experience. (Long post!)

So day 14, Anno Squillarum 1. Today is the second week I have had these little shrimps, and what a change. First I had a mass molt beginning three to four days ago, and they came out of hiding and started acting fairly hyper as of yesterday night. Today was their second feeding in the time I've had ...

Re: The New Supershrimp Owner Experience. (Long post!)

"I'm already pondering the possibility of enmeshing the strands of macroalgae in a screen to make faux "moss mats". I LOVE this idea. The mesh would have to be plastic. I don't think you can use metal screening. Would you know where to find plastic screening? I might give this a try....

Re: My first molt!

Two more molts. Nevermind about spring break, I think it's streaking season. Maybe your tank is too warm? :-D :smt005 It is getting pretty warm here in Durham. I just had another shrimp molt. Didn't catch it in the act, but the empty exoskeleton is just hanging on some rock in the little &qu...

I think their most important superpower is the ability to steal your heart.

... at least, they've completely stolen mine.

Re: Supershrimp superpowers?

This is off-topic for this forum, but whenever you mention stomatopods I remember the time my dentist uncle worked in an office with a HUGE coral-loaded reef tank, full of beautiful fish, and his anecdote about the fish vanishing after they had a hitchhiker on some of the live rock in the tank. (ONE...
