I agree that most (if not all of us do not have the time or expertise to interbreed shrimp) hoping for a new shrimp in doing this is I believe fool hardy several of our shrimp are inbred (CRS) that there exists some problems in the strains, interbreeding would most likely compound problems and reall...

Meds used for shrimp most always do more harm than good, There are no specific meds mfg'd for shrimp. Wild caught shrimp will often have problems, so, like fish, etc quarantine of new animals is a good practice. When shrimp are well cared for, closely monitored parameters, fed well with proper foods...

Heather, a thought, when a seasoned sponge filter is used with a high bubble count sometimes very small food particles and minute water fauna/flora are sucked out of the sponge and scattered into the water column. I witnessed this in some of my tanks, my solutions were, rinse the sponge more often &...

Drakken, in my 71 year lifespan I have been doing freshwater for 48 yrs, and salt tanks for 22 yrs and reef for 14 yrs. I can understand your liking the catfish, but the rest of your story is unbelievable if you had $35,000 worth of stock in that small a tank everything must have been stacked on top...

no the lacquered gravel would not elevate no3 because of something from the lacquer itself but it could as I stated produce no3 in that there is no real area for bacteria to populate due to the smooth surfaces. water, particularly tank water is capable of absorbing many contaminates from the ambient...

your question about cross seeding bacteria--- no you can not seed a salt setup with bacteria from a fresh set up & vice versa. osmotic shock would occur in the bacteria the same as it would an other life form. you may be able to secure some live sand and live rock from the place you are buying t...

I see your very pretty gravel. that gravel has a coating of lacquer like substance to keep it shiny. it is not a good gravel for beneficial bacteria to colonize due to its lack of porosity and smoothness/slippery surface so chances are good that it was not functioning as a bio filter.

I may be grasping at straws here but, what if the same conditions abound ( & logic says it would) in your salt tank as did in your fresh tank. salt is far less forgiving than fresh. the way it strikes me is, it happened to one tank, so why would another be spared. my thought would be to find the...
