Re: My new Opae Ula tank (#5)
Thanks Mustafa. I just reoriented the tank a bit, added some different (Dragon) stones and introduced the micro algae, snails and some brackish water copepods (as well as some phytoplankton). I will post more as I migrate some shrimp from my other tanks into this once it cures. E15DCC30-DE74-4591-88...

Re: My new Opae Ula tank (#5)
Hi, the light is actually a Kessil A80 unit. I’ve been using the same model on my 40 liter set up with good results. It generates a natural sunlight spectrum and you can adjust both the light color/temperature as well as intensity. It happens to fit perfectly on top of the flask opening (~5” diameter)

My new Opae Ula tank (#5)
As it's been a few years since I set up a new Opae tank - - and I'm getting tired of staring at the wall in my home office while on work calls during COVID lock-down - - I decided to prep a new set-up that I wanted to share with the forum. It's based on a 20 liter / ~5.25 gallon Ace Glass laboratory...

Re: Dwarf Hermit Crab
It's been some time since I last posted on this thread (+two years) but I thought I'd share a quick update. Both of my dwarf hermit crabs are still going strong. Over six if not almost seven years and counting. The only change is that their shells have now taken on a nice green patina to match their...

Re: New Opae Ula tank (in a giant lab reactor)
Well, it's been about six months since setting up the lab reactor and everyone is still healthy and happy. No berried shrimp that I have found yet but all are doing great and the tank continues to mature with controlled algae growth. The snail population has ebbed and flowed with a few passing on wh...

Re: Horned nerite snail
FYI, you can find brackish water horned nerite snails from another vendor. I've had them in my lab reactor setup for a few months now and they are doing fine. Not sure what the protocol is on this site to share the vendors name but happy to pass it along if you send me a message.

Re: New Opae Ula tank (in a giant lab reactor)
Hi Ryan, I've been tweaking with my light intesnsity as well. I recently (about two weeks ago) lowered the full daytime intensity a measurable amount in my sphere as well as some of the off hour settings to cull some of he microagae/anglehair growth. Before I lowed the settings, I didnt' witness any...

Re: New Opae Ula tank (in a giant lab reactor)
Sure Ryan. These are the settings I'm currently running on the full day cycle. I haven't had any issues with algae bloom nor the bubbles you are referencing. The growth has been stable and the shrimp are active throughout the day. Hope this helps Time: 6am - 7:30am (to simulate dawn) A 2% B 2% C 2% ...

Re: New Opae Ula tank (in a giant lab reactor)
Ryan, totally agree with your observations. When I first plugged in the light before I picked up the wireless module / IOS it was clear that these additions are definitely not optional. The light in native format is bright enough to illuminate an operating room! I was able to set up and link the wir...

Re: New Opae Ula tank (in a giant lab reactor)
Thanks for the note Mustafa and Ryan. Regarding the coral and sea fans, I broke up the coral just enough to fit it into the top and then reassembled the pieces in the sphere. The sea fans weren't that flexible at first but I soaked them in water overnight and they were malleable enough to bend into ...

Re: How do I prepare lava rock to add to tank?
If it's slag, I'd think it would be quite deleterious to put into a tank given the various metal oxides and other elements that would likely leach into the water over time.

Re: New Opae Ula tank (in a giant lab reactor)
Some new pics of the tank with the shrimp added. I also added some additional calcium carbonate base rock. Water is a bit cloudy (proabably due to the new shrimp biomass) but will post some new pics once everything settles in.

Re: New Opae Ula tank (in a giant lab reactor)
Many thanks for the kind comments. Indeed, the UFO from Zetlight is almost a perfect fit for the sphere and has the added benefit of forming a reasonably tight fit with the top preventing evaporation. It's also water proof so moisture penetration shouldnt' be an issue. Re: getting the contents throu...

Re: New Opae Ula tank (in a giant lab reactor)
Here is an updated shot of the reactor with some sea fans, coral, microalgae and snails. Also, when enabled by the wifi controller, the Zetlight UFO is really quite dynamic. Shrimp coming soon!
