New Opae Ula tank (in a giant lab reactor)
I broke ground today on my fourth Opae ula tank, this time using a great vintage lab reactor that I found on eBay. It's pretty massive in size, and it took over 11 gallons of distilled water to fill it. I also seeded it with water from each of my other three tanks as well as some micro algae. It's s...

Re: Macro Algae turning white
That might be the case Mustafa. Will experiment with Angie hair removal and see what happens. Stay tuned.

Re: Macro Algae turning white
Agree Mustafa. I have no filtration or aeration across any of my three tanks (and no water changes for 2-3 years, just add distilled water periodically when levels drop). Was actually looking closely at all my tanks today given the discussion here. My 7 gallon still has a relatively healthy clump of...

Re: Macro Algae turning white
Interesting observation minishrimps. The issue I have is that all three of my tanks have beenrunning almost identically. Each has dwarf crabs, each gets the same amount of food for the past 2 - 4 years (once a week feelings of a small amount of crushed pellet) and water chemistry looks identical bet...

Re: Macro Algae turning white
I'm using Zetlight Mini's on two of my tanks and a Zetlight Nano on the third (larger) tank. The mini's are rated 270 lumens and 6500k color temp. The Nano is tunable across the blue spectrum and is running white light at 12,000k and 450 lumens. Note, all three setups generated very good micro algae...

Re: Dwarf Hermit Crab
Mustafa, I think I've noted this in a earlier post but I've had successful shrimp reproduction in one of my three tanks that have the dwarf crabs. Not so in the other two tanks however so perhaps the reproduction is unusual / an anomaly

Re: Macro Algae turning white
I've had this happen in two of my three tanks. In each instance, after long periods of productive growth the micro algae suddenly began to turn pale and ultimately disintegrated / died. Neither tank has rebounded to successfully support a significant amount of microalgae, there are just a few small ...

Re: Strange guests in my tank
I had the exact same situation in my 7 gallon opae tank back in ~April. It appeared to be a "bloom" in the population of small copepods that clustered to one or two dense columns and exhibited the same up / down almost cyclical motion. It disappeared in about five days and the tank is back...

Re: Dwarf Hermit Crab
MaryLou, glad to be of help. I still have fairly stable populations in all three of my tanks. Few pics attached. My oldes tank (approaching three years old) has two left of the original six, both quite large now in white shells. My second oldest tank still has three of the original six. Two pics att...

Re: Dwarf Hermit Crab
Mary Lou, I don't think the algae alone will support the crabs. My sense is that they definitely need an external food source vs. just the algae. In terms of my experience, I've lost 30% - 60% of my initial crab population within the first 1 - 4 months of introducing them to my three tanks, which I ...

Re: Dwarf Hermit Crab
Mustafa,
Correct, no water changes across any of my tanks and no filtration. I have some of your microalgae in each as well as angle hair moss from another vendor. The angle hair grows fairly quickly and I periodically remove some to keep it in check.

Re: Dwarf Hermit Crab
Mustafa, I've had successful breeding in one if my 3 gallon tanks with the miniature hermit crabs. It's actually not the oldest set-up but arguably has the most hiding spots, etc.

Re: Dwarf Hermit Crab
I've had dwarf hermits in all three of my tanks, which have bee up and running for roughly 2.5 years (3 gallons), 2 years (3 gallons) and 9 months (7 gallons), respectively. None of the tanks are filtered or aerated. The water is completely stagnant. I feed them (and the shrimp) a small portion of c...
