correct, the 5 in 1 strips. its what i use.
if any ammonia is present it would cause the nitrite levels to register and nitrate to be off the chart, no?

very good to know thank you. i use the strips because they are cheap, but i suppose you get what you pay for. i'll "bite the bullet" on cost and switch to liquids.

i'd *try* to bring it down to a pH of 7.0 (its a pretty safe #) and get a test for the gH and kH. if they are to high, it could be potentially lethal. same if it's too low.

i have my 10 gallon cycling with a DIY filter and a silvertip tetra, getting ready for the leaf litter (that is still drying). the next tank to my collection will *hopefully* be a 70G bowfront that my neighbor is getting rid of for cheap (with the stand for $500 - maybe i can talk him down to $450) ...
