Re: Heater recs please!

No heater is necessary. You really can't get one for a tank that small that would be reliable and safe anyway. The ones made for small containers do not have a thermostat in them and it's always a possibility that your animals could get cooked. I totally agree. OP, you don’t need a heater, and with...

Re: Bizarre Behavior

Any updates? If your shrimp are still alive and you haven’t done anything yet, I would mix up a gallon of distilled water with marine salt (at half ocean salinity) and immediately transfer all shrimps with a net. I think there is a contaminant in the water that is poisoning them. If they have not im...

Re: Breeding issue

The tank looks kind of sparse. I think you should add some lava rocks for more hiding places. It is not unusual for a newly established tank to not have much breeding in the first year. Some people have shrimp that berry in the first few months, but that seems to be the exception, not the norm. I do...

That is a lot of babies! I tried to count and I got to about 25. I have never had a shrimp with that many eggs. Very cool.

Re: Tank cleaning?

Okay, I will post some pics when I get a chance... I do not think that light green algae is hair algae, but I would appreciate a link to your youtube video should I ever need it. I do live in florida so the tank gets a lot of natural light. I forgot to mention, my source of calcium is an eggshell. ...

Re: Upgrade tank

No, you should mix some marine salt with distilled water to make brackish water. Follow the directions on the box, except use half the recommended amount of salt. Use that to fill the tank.
If you only add distilled water, you could dilute the salt in the water too much.

Re: New Tank Setup, Please Review

Something happened to my first post, so I will try again. Luckily I didn't have to type this out twice, haha. :D It is good that you have put a lot of thought and effort into setting this up to ensure success. I set up my first tank five years ago when my son was three, and we have loved watching th...

Re: Tank cleaning?

As long as your tank is growing algae, there is no need to feed the shrimp. They will eat the algae in the tank. If the algae is making it hard to see the shrimp, maybe just clean the front glass and leave the rest. If you have excess algae growth, try to reduce the amount of light the tank gets. St...

Re: Time to move tanks

I couldn't tell the larger tank was acrylic, and it looks fine to me. I am definitely interested to see how they look in there.
I decided to just set up another tank using a cube style aquarium that I already have. But I am still considering setting up a jar in the future.

Re: Time to move tanks

Those jars all look great but I really like the new large jar, and the rock in the middle of it is awesome. Is the distortion from the round glass bothersome to you? I have been thinking of starting a jar or new small tank and am trying to decide if the curved glass would make it hard to view the sh...

If they are make for use in aquariums they will be safe in your tank. The choice is up to you and your aesthetics.

Re: snails & a few other newb inquiries

If you can catch them all, I think it would be safer to put them in a small container and transport like that. If you are not able not catch them all, then I would remove everything but the substrate so they don't get crushed by shifting decor. Perhaps add a bit more brackish water and then attach s...

Re: Shrimpies looking for a new home (Boston, MA)

I sent you a message but figured I would respond here too in case you missed the pm. I live pretty far away from you, but if you are not able to find a local seller, I would happily adopt your shrimp, although it would involve shipping them to me. I hope you can find someone closer though as it woul...

Re: New tank set up

Hello Mustafa, my apologies for not replying to you last year. I read your message but must have got distracted, or perhaps did not respond since I was undecided about what to do. I ended up doing nothing, and have had maybe one more shrimp die, but several clutches of eggs successfully hatched at d...
