Dwarf Hermit Crab

I thought I would start a new thread for my questions. Has anyone put dwarf hermit crabs in their setup, success or failure? I starting reading about them last night and thought one or two very small ones would be OK for my little 2.2 gallon. But I couldn't find much info about what species are defi...

Re: My Tank

Your tank looks great! What size is it? I have about a 2 gallon and was thinking about adding a hermit crab, but I think my tank might be too small. What do you think? And do you have any advice for adding the hermit crab? Do you need to acclimate or can I just pop him in? ETA: Do you add iodine to ...

Re: Popcorn of Death

Your substrate looks fine. Your temp looks kind of high though. What is it? I can't read the thermometer, but isn't the green zone usually the range for tropical fish? Also, put your hand in the tank to make sure your heater isn't shorting out and electrocuting them. How are the shrimp behaving toda...

Re: Popcorn of Death

Varanus, I was just coming on to post the same thing. :) I'm in a shrimp fb group and last night someone posted the most awful video of his shrimp popcorning around, twitching, and trying to climb out of the tank. In a short time, over 10 shrimp were dead. One of the suggestions was that they were b...

Re: Algae in shrimp bowl?

I don't think 10 hours of light is too much, but if the algae is growing more than you like, cutting back the light will help. And like Varanus mentioned, they don't need acclimation, and that film is just algae.

Re: Popcorn of Death

Ah, I see that you are using marine salt, so you can ignore that part.
I wouldn't worry about the temperature fluctuations, as these guys don't seem to be bothered by that. Are you using a heater, filter, or air stone? What temperature is the tank, and can you provide a picture?

Re: Popcorn of Death

I've been skimming through this thread. You have lost two shrimp in a day, and another is going downhill, is that right? RO water from the store is perfectly fine. I can't remember if this was mentioned, but are you using aquarium salt, table salt, or marine salt? It MUST be marine salt, any other w...

Re: Popcorn of Death

How long has the tank been set up? And do you have a test kit? I would check ph, ammonia, and nitrite ASAP. To me, it sounds like it could be a water quality issue.

Re: I just switched my baby shrimp to an aquarium

Like Mech already said, you do not need a filter. People successfully keep these shrimp in containers without heaters, air circulation, or filters. Once their habitat is established, they are very low maintenance.
How did your shrimp rescue go?

Re: Amano eating RCS? +nerite problem

What a bummer! Did your snail keep falling on its back or just stop moving?
I winder if we will ever be to put nerites back in the tank. I have done three water changes since.

Re: MiniShrimps

I think 1.012 is perfect. I don't think you need to do another water change at this point. :)

That's a fantastic picture! Pretty shrimp!
Are your snails horned nerites? I've been thinking about adding one or two to my tank. They seem to be kind of fragile though. :/

Re: MiniShrimps

Ph of 8.0 is fine. I think my ph is actually 8.2.
My salinity is around 1.013, and I think 1.017 is too high. I think you should try to lower your salinity before adding your snails. Your plants will be fine.

Amano eating RCS? +nerite problem

I put an Amano and a bamboo shell in my tank with RCS about a month ago. A few days before I got the shrimp a berried female's eggs hatched. Since then, 2 more females have had their eggs hatch. And I can't find a single baby! Will amanos eat baby RCS? About 3 weeks ago I had an infestation of hydra...

I started with 15 in a two gallon. I think 20 is fine.
