Re: MiniShrimps

My only recommendation is to make sure you have a liquid test kit to check your water. It sounds like you are on the right track. :) And hopefully you can save the shrimps from your dad's ecosphere soon. I wish they didn't sell those awful things! If a shrimp in there does die, you need to release t...

Re: Surprise Shrimp Arrival

The first thing you should purchase is a test kit to check the water parameters. Do not buy the strips, as they can be inaccurate, but instead the liquid kits with test tubes. I would check your ammonia and nitrite levels daily. Purchase a bottle of Seachem Prime, which will detoxify nitrite and amm...

Re: New "bottle tank" setup

I would expect you would run into trouble getting decorations into the bottle and arranged. You would need a long pair of tweezers in case a shrimp were to die, otherwise I don't think you could remove the body. Like jonesinfershrimp already mentioned, marimo balls are no good in brackish water. In ...

Re: New tank set up

Varanus, you were right and some of the shrimp are getting darker, although it seems like about half are still pale. Tonight I noticed a baby snail. It's about 2 mm long. I'm very excited that this tank is doing well enough to support new life. ETA: I have seen 5 molts in the past week, so I think t...

Re: whats temperature does your tank sit at?

My temp is 68F.
It was interesting to see the shrimp react to me putting in my thermometer, and later when I removed it. I heard they are drama queens but I had no idea! They all freaked out and swam around all herky jerky.

Re: Received my very first supershrimp

Ken you are right, it's not 1/2 gallon, but 1/4. I shouldn't post so late at night; I think I was just too tired. So the lightbulb container is really too small for them. Mandapandad, I read that you were trying to acclimate marimo to brackish, so I thought the vase was brackish. Are those mini mari...

Re: My success story

Brad, your tank looks great! It inspires me to remove some of the decorations in my tank. Or maybe set up a second tank. :-D

Re: Received my very first supershrimp

4-5 cups of water is around 1/2 gallon, so 10 shrimps would be fine in there. Marimo balls do not last in brackish water and will eventually die. It takes a while but it will happen. I strongly recommend you remove them. They are attractive in a vase with plain water by themselves if you don't have ...

Re: im so excited!

I see Mech recommended a fan coral, which is some great advice. My shrimp LOVE my fan coral. And it is very becoming in the tank.
I think 30-40 shrimp would be fine for a tank your size, especially if you wait awhile after your snails and algae arrive.

Re: New tank set up

Tank is cycled and shrimp have been added! They seem happy enough and there is so much algae they almost never move at all. I noticed that I have copepods so I guess the tank is doing well. Some shrimps are a very bright red (one was even bright red when they arrived and it is one of the darkest one...

Re: whats temperature does your tank sit at?

I don't have a heater in my tank, but our house never gets colder than about 60F. I don't even know what the temp of my tank is because I don't have a thermometer. They can stand a wide range in temps as far as I know, from about 60F-85F or so.

Re: All larvae die. HELP

My ph is also at 8.2. I use aragonite sand and several dead corals. I also know that marine salt contains something to help maintain a constant ph. I do not know how that works though.

Re: All larvae die. HELP

You may have said already, but what substrate are you using? Do you have any coral skeletons in your tank? Crushed coral or aragonite sand/substrate is really important to help maintain a nice ph for these shrimps.

Re: Opae ulas passive in new tank! HELP!!!

Mech, I'm not really sure. I think they are crustaceans and a form of phytoplankton. They are found in fresh or saltwater. Mine are, so far, only in my freshwater shrimp tank, which is also planted. I think they may had been introduced on my marimos or plants I bought from the LFS. I only noticed th...
