Re: Over Populated Snails

Hah, you can send me your extra snails, mine seem to be dying off. :( No idea why, the shrimp are happily multiplying. But my snails are in a bad way and my macroalgae isn't growing either. We are definitely having the opposite problems with our snails and macroalgae!! :P Maybe differences in the a...

Re: More questions about my tank, macroalgae, and snails

As for the snails, some are big, some are small. I have at least one large-ish one that's still active, and assorted smaller ones that are as well. I have at least two large ones that are pushing up daisies and a scattering of little ones that are likewise incapacitated. Spouse's tank is full of fat...

More questions about my tank, macroalgae, and snails

I have a couple of questions, and I'm wondering if these issues are related. My tank still seems to be a questionable place for snails; I usually see some that are going about their business and the occasional tiny baby snail, but they also seem to have a fairly high attrition rate. Some of the ones...

Re: Spouse wants office shrimp too - how best to make it a surprise?

Here's the picture again, hosted elsewhere: http://www.emilysdomain.org/web%20forum%20images/jake%20tank%20setup.JPG Turns out Photobucket recently disabled image embedding on third party sites unless you pay for an account. As in, the only reason to use Photobucket in the first place. Maybe the mos...

Re: Spouse wants office shrimp too - how best to make it a surprise?

The lamp is a cheap fish tank LED lamp from Amazon. I made a stand for it instead of clipping it directly to the tank side.

Population density in the wild

Out of curiosity, what do wild populations of opae ula look like? What's the population density in their natural habitat? I'm not sure if you'd count them per square inch of surfaces (ground, rock surfaces, etc), or per unit volume of water. On YouTube you can find people's opae tanks where there ar...

Re: mating behavior?

Quick update: I now have at least 15 larvae floating around, and four or five more females carrying eggs - this is out of 15 shrimp I bought in late February or thereabouts. It's a population explosion!

Re: Spouse wants office shrimp too - how best to make it a surprise?

Yesterday at long last, I delivered the new tank. I had ordered the shrimp last week, but left them in their shipping bag for the trip across town. I left the snails and decorations in place, decanted about 3/4 of the water into a separate jug, and called an Uber to get me across town so that I coul...

Re: mating behavior?

I've had them for maybe three months, and I've fed them twice, a tiny crumble of a shrimp pellet each time. I thought maybe one of them had dropped her eggs, but then today I saw both egg-laden ladies too. We're having an open house at work this weekend, so hopefully the extra commotion won't freak ...

Re: mating behavior?

Actually, I have two females with eggs and didn't even know it! Either I hadn't seen them both out and about at the same time until today, or a second one just laid recently. But I fed the shrimp today and they all came out to get at the food, and saw that there were two berried females. Cool!

The expectant lady has been mostly hiding in the center of a little pile of rocks, but today she did venture out enough for a good egg photo:

Re: mating behavior?

I have 15 shrimp, and while I wouldn't bet on my ability to tell them apart, I have some that I'm pretty sure are female and others that must be either juvenile or male. The ones going nutzo were the latter sort. I did see a fresh molt in the same vicinity as all the action, so now I'm sure that's w...
