How Long did it take for your macro algae to get that large?
It was put in the tank in mid-January.

And news! The population in the tank has more than doubled with both berried moms having had their hatch. Lots of little, tiny babies! If I can manage any decent photos, I'll post them.

Thanks! I plan on starting another tank for my office, so I'll cut that macro algae in half and use it to jump start the new tank.

Berries!

I haven't posted recently, things have been quiet on the shrimp front.

But at least two of my shrimp are berried now. I'm going to be a grandpa!

Re: Tank is now populated

Took them about a minute to find the pellets. Here's a shot of the feeding frenzy (such as it was) and a closeup of a happy shrimp on the macro algae.

Re: Tank is now populated

Update time It's been a month and they've pretty much cleaned all the algae from the tank. Everybody is out grazing most of the day, but calmly. The only frantic activity has been when I've added water, and that only lasts a few minutes. The macro algae is growing and the moss ball now floats full t...

Re: Tank is now populated

It's a sea sponge "skeleton". I picked it up at a dealer at the Hotel Tucson-City Center at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show last month. I was looking for a nice fan coral to fill the open space, but the ones they had were too large. I saw this and fell in love with it.

Re: Going to start my tank this weekend

My shrimp order was delivered on Friday. They didn't go through the hiding phase that so many have reported. At any time at least half are somewhere visible.

I'll start a new thread with photos shortly.

Re: Going to start my tank this weekend

Tested this morning, all parameters where they belong; so I apparently have fully nitrifying/denitrifying conditions established. :smt023

Just placed my order for 20 shrimp!

Re: Going to start my tank this weekend

There's was evidently some organic material in the sponge. After a week, ammonia and nitrite are fine, but nitrate is slightly elevated; still <5 mg/L. I'll let it go another week and check again.

That's a sea sponge "skeleton". Pretty much the same thing as coral, chemically.

Re: Going to start my tank this weekend

I've been away for a memorial service. I put 3700 miles on the rental car in 10 days... All the empty vertical space in the tank bothered me, so I wandered a few of the venues at the Gem and Mineral Show in Tucson while I was there and found this shell and sponge thing. I'm in Tucson right now and the Gem and Mineral Show is going on. I may just have to look for some Aragonite specimens.

Re: Going to start my tank this weekend

I managed to pry the box from their clutches. It took them about 20 minutes to find it in the sorting facility - it had been "misplaced". :| Immediately took the box home and liberated them into my tank; in the 5 minutes I was able to be there (I was on lunch from work) at least half of th...
