Re: Absolute beginner - Some concerns
Based on what I've read here, the Ecosphere contains hair algae, which I don't want in my aquarium, so I'll try to remove that, or make sure it doesn't get into the main tank. I have hair algae in my tank. It's not a problem. It grows very slowly. My tank has been set up for 2 1/2 years with a stro...

Re: Absolute beginner - Some concerns
Will the ecosphere fit in the new container? If so, I would fill the new container with enough water to cover the sphere along with some substrate, enough to keep the sphere stable. Gently and slowly turn the ecosphere upside down and open it. Then submerge the sphere in the container. The shrimp wi...

My guess is not enough cycle time. 2 weeks probably would have been enough time IF you had included some rocks and a small amount of water from your established tank.
You also don't mention anything about light. It can take longer to cycle if you don't have enough adequate light.

Re: Tank maintenance
It seems like there would be a more recommended way of cleaning algae off of plexiglass. I have an acrylic tank and we've cleaned that glass with an acrylic safe pad we bought from the local Petco/Smart. A quick Google says plexiglass is harder than acrylic. Sitll, I won't argue with success. Thanks...

Re: Stringy Algae?
It might be hair algae. If you reach in and touch it, is it really fine and slimy? If so, it's probably hair algae. I end up with a crop in my tank every year or so. I pluck out as much as I can with aquascape tweezers. I've noticed it grows more slowly in brackish water than it did in my freshwater...

Re: A year later and no babies.
I went 16 months before I saw larvae. See this topic: https://www.petshrimp.com/discussions/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=6414&p=43800 I assumed it was the flashing blue lights from my cable modem at night. I started covering the modem with a piece of cardboard at night and I got babies soon afterwar...

I'm not sure if the 24/7 light is a good idea. I remember reading someplace that plants, algae, and bacteria need a day/night cycle to replenish and grow properly. If you continue the 24/7, I'd be interested in hearing how it works.

Re: Anoxic / Toxic lower zone with strange boundary layer?
I know this is a few days late, but I'm wondering if you can siphon out the water in the lower layer then fill the top layer with new brackish water. Mix it up well and check the salinity.
Then again, at this point it's probably better/safer to start over.

Re: My 3rd DIY Opae Ula tank
That's about a 5 gallon tank, so you could probably start with anything less than 50 shrimp. If you go too few they'll all hide and you won't see them. You might even be able to start with 100, but my guess is that's pushing it. I dumped 65 in my 10-gallon and haven't had any issues. I'm talking abo...

Re: Hair Algae Invasion
You won't be able to remove all the algae so oxygen won't be a problem. You have a cycled tank. You can try to remove all the algae but you won't be able to; At least not without taking the tank apart and washing it out. Also, I thought there was gas exchange at the surface. I might be wrong about t...

Re: Tank setup
In my opinion, a nerite is a good idea but only if/when you have a lot of algae. Depending on your lighting, you may never get that much. If you put a nerite in too soon it may starve.
Edit: Oops, I didn't see that Varanus already answered the question.

Re: Is this the right kind of green algae?
The only reason I added snails is because I couldn't see into the tank. I added the nerites first. Then I threw in the MTS because the local pet store (PetCoSmart) had an infestation and they gave them to me for free when I was buying more nerites for another tank. I'm with you on the "don't fi...
