Re: Water changes

But at what point is my 1 gallon tank overstocked to the point that nitrates build up? And how can I mitigate that (other than move them to a bigger tank)? I'm thinking that's where the algae comes in. Nitrates build up, algae builds up, more shrimp (and snails, if you have them) eat more algae. Th...

Re: Water changes

Thanks! Some of my shrimp do have that, but I thought it was a natural coloration change. I found a video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Z9Hn1RkuFI None of my shrimp have died. Maybe they're hiding in the rocks someplace and dying there. But I'm not seeing any non-moving bodies, or bod...

Re: Water changes

I've had my tank for just over 3 years. There are two things I've never done: 1. Feed 2. Water change. I have a standard Pet*/Walmart cheap 10 gallon tank. When my water level gets down a bit, maybe 1/2 an inch below the black plastic at the top. I add a half gallon of RO/DI water to top it off. Tha...

Re: Tiny white creature in tank

It might be daphnia. I had them. They swim in a jerky motion. They're very small, less than .5 mm. If you look close with a strong magnifier, you might be able to see two deer-antler-like claws. I ignored them and they died off, or the shrimp ate them... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daphnia_pulex I...

Re: New journey and questions

It may be too late to change things, but I have to ask just what the "aquarium soil" you used is? I was thinking the same thing about the soil. I'm wondering if it's used for planted tanks. I used aragonite and lava rocks in my 10 gal. I don't know what my parameters were because I didn't...

Re: Question for Owners with Older Tanks

I started a 10 gallon 3 years ago. Shrimp only, no snails, with a strong LED light I got from Amazon. Over the course of a few months the algae took over and I couldn't see the 50 or 60 shrimp I started with. I got 3 nerite snails and they took care of it. Later, I added a bunch of MTS snails. The M...

Re: snails & a few other newb inquiries

Welcome! The snails do burrow and hide. They'll come out eventually and breed. I'm not sure what to tell you about the algae. Can you scrape it off the glass and leave it in the tank somehow? If it's really thick you could get a nerite snail, but they can be voracious eaters. It might be too much fo...

Re: Ideal Tank Balance

Thanks mike.d. Watched the video. Luckily I've never had hair algae in any of my tanks. Wonder what conditions encourage that? I had a hair algae issue in my tank. I suspect two possible causes: 1. I added lava rock from a freshwater shrimp tank that had a hair algae problem. I didn't bother to cle...

Re: Ideal Tank Balance

Snails as indicator species...what does a snail die off mean? Or an abundance of snail reproduction, can there ever be too many? I have MTS snails in my 10-gallon tank. I started with 14 and within a few months had too many to count. Then I noticed the bigger ones had died leaving empty shells behi...

Re: Attempt #1 = Fail :(

Assuming you followed the directions on the site and mixed your water and set everything up as recommended... My guess is there was some kind of contamination left in the bottle. Maybe some soap that didn't get completely washed out or some leftover bourbon? Maybe there were contaminants left in the...

Re: 4 years and suddenly...

Had someone cleaned nearby recently? Other posts here have mentioned spray cleaners that got droplets into the air and settled in the tank. Is the tank covered?

Re: Setup suggestions needed for newbie

Any recommendations for brackish plants ... I used to have a freshwater planted tank. For me, plants are an "even when you succeed, you fail" situation. My plants grew great. So great that I had to cut them back every 2 months. Then every month. Then every 2 weeks. Then they filled up the...

Re: Day 1 new set up

I wanted to try a mangrove too. But then I read that they excrete salt on their leaves and I was worried that would remove it from the water. I didn't want the hassle of testing and adding salt back to the tank. I was also worried about the light requirements. I don't have a sunroom.

Re: help me make a paradigm shift -- why no sponge filter?

Here's why: 1. Filtration isn't needed. 2. It can be detrimental. Why isn't it needed? Think of why you'd normally use a filter in a regular fish tank. The purpose of filtration is to keep the ugly, beneficial bacteria out of sight and locked away. (Beneficial bacteria processes the waste from the a...

Re: Dying snails?!?

Thanks for asking about this! I've noticed the same thing with my MTS snails. The empty shells I see are larger. My smaller MTS, nerites, and shrimp are fine. I even have tons of shrimp larvae floating, too numerous to count, as well as berried shrimp. I want to assume it's normal because the nerite...
