Perhaps unfinished food and poop... I feed very minimally... abt once every 2-3 months... with those spirulina powder... I have light on for abt 8 hours a day so there are enough algae for them...
So that layer of sediments must be either of those...

Maybe the berried females did not drop the eggs... maybe it had released as floaters... and it got stuck at the filter... shine a strong light at one location for a while... if there are any surviving floaters they will be attracted towards the light...

Re: Can I save my shrimp?
From my experience... i find that opae ula to be very hardy... a sudden change in salinity will not affect them much... yes they may turn pale for a while... but it will slowly regain back the color in a few days...

Sediments on the substrate
I noticed that there is a layer of sediments on top of the substrate... i guess that is years of dirt or poops resting at the bottom...
Do we siphon it out or just leave it alone? I’m afraid that disturbing the sediments might stir up more dirt and affects the water quality...

Re: Population Explosion!
I lived in a tropical country where it is 30-32deg C on avg in the day... so far my tanks had experienced a few breeding blooms when there was a prolonged raining period for around 1-2 weeks which brings down the avg temperature to ard 25-28... the breeding bloom coincided with this drop in temperat...

Re: My 3rd DIY Opae Ula tank
Hi. How do you maintain the crystal clear water in the tank after some time? My algae start to build up at the glass. I do not have any snail in my tank. Thanks. You will need nerite snails to clean the glass... they did excellent job in cleaning the algae off the glass... all my opae tanks got at ...

Re: Currently cycling w/ questions
There is no need to order “starter” algae nor using a filter to cycle the tank... i think letting it cycle naturally is the best way to keep the tank free from other contamination... Given time... algae with start to grow in a week or so if u do 12H light cycle...i will typically add in nerite snail...

Re: Setup suggestions needed for newbie
How do we know whether algae are green vs brown? I was wondering any suggestions how to lower down the algae growing on the surface of the glass jar? should I use some of those magnet algae scrubber? remove the algae manually (e.g. using a straw)? or other method? (I have about 10 snails (plus babi...

Re: Salinity level
i read that article as well... so sometimes i wonder whether the shrimps can be triggered to breed if there is a slightly increase in salinity... maybe during water top to replace evaporation... instead of topping freshwater... can top off with slightly brackish water... just like some freshwater fi...
