Re: What did I do wrong

Others have already covered what might have gone wrong (plant or dead bodies decomposing creasing excess pollution, overfeeding - leftover food decomposing, live sand, etc.) I was trying to think of any other possibilities given you are new and may not consider some of the basics. Was your old tank ...

Re: New Shrimp Mom

I believe any fish food is okay. The only thing with feeding in an ecosphere is that it's so small you can easily crash the system if you pollute the water with uneaten food. Get a long aquarium tweezer if you plan on doing feeding and take out any uneaten food. Those food plates don't work because ...

Re: How do I promote algae growth?

If you don't have anything living in them, you can add direct sunlight for a few hours a day (it increase the temperature so not a good idea if you have live things). You can also add some macroalgae (it may have algae to help seed the tank) or snails as the waste will help with the nitrogen cycle. ...

Re: Meeting Poseidon

Thanks for sharing! It was an entertaining read! I am happy that you didn't lose a shrimp as you had feared. I also have one that's larger, redder, and in many ways "meaner" than my other shrimps. I get frustrated at her because she always hogged the shrimp food when I used to feed them.

Limit lighting to control algae?

I have some rescue ecosystem shrimps in a .4 gallon jar. Because I only have so few shrimps, I notice more algae growth than they can eat. Is there any problems associated with limiting duration of the LED lighting to 6-8 hours a day? Could that affect their circadian rhythm or their health negative...

Re: Have 8-year Old Ecosystem Shrimp - Not sure what to do

Thanks for the update! I'm glad that Trooper made it to his new home and you can still keep track of him! My ecosystem shrimps are happy in their new home too although I noticed that they tend to be more white when the light is on and redder when light's off. Not sure if it's a lighting issue, a sub...

Re: floating moss ball

Thanks Mike.D! :)

I've noticed that it floats up during the day when the light is on and comes down to "sleep" at night. I'll just let it be.

Re: New set up tank, see the picture

I noticed your water looks a little cloudy in that picture; did it settle? I also used aragonite sand and rinsed it for like 20 plus minutes to get rid of the cloudiness in the water. I was under the impression that rinsing the sand well is especially important if one doesn't have a filter, but I'm ...

Re: Have 8-year Old Ecosystem Shrimp - Not sure what to do

We are in the same time zone but I'm in CA! That's good that you got different size shrimps though, with a juvenile, you can estimate that they'll have more years to live wheres with an adult shrimp it'd be harder to gauge how old it is. Hopefully, someone can answer our question about what is the &...

floating moss ball

I recently added a shrimp from my old ecosystem to test my new small tank. Tank had been left alone to cycle with a moss ball from Mustafa since late September. I moved a shrimp in last week when I observed brown algae and changed the lighting to LED (from sunlight) to prevent temperature fluctuatio...

Re: Have 8-year Old Ecosystem Shrimp - Not sure what to do

Yay! Congrats!! Does that mean you can no longer tell trooper apart? Zippy, the pioneer of my new tank and famously named for his skill in escaping my ladle, is red and doing well. I may try your transfer method for the others but for now, I'm still trying to figure out how I can keep the other jar ...

Keeping old ecosystem as back up?

I'm in the process of rehoming friends from a small ecosystem jar to a larger home. Can I keep the ecosystem jar (it's an open system) as a "back up" tank for emergencies? The old home is fully cycled and has plenty of green algae whereas the new home is just recently cycled with diatom. W...

Re: Have 8-year Old Ecosystem Shrimp - Not sure what to do

Oh how exciting! That's exactly what I did. I moved just one guy (it was sooooo stressful for both of us to capture him though) to the new home and I'm going to wait a few days before moving the rest. However, in hindsight I wonder if I should wait for green algae growth because it only has brown al...

Re: Have 8-year Old Ecosystem Shrimp - Not sure what to do

How did it go after you introduce the shrimp? I just transferred one of my ecosystem shrimp over to the new home (after observing brown algae), so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. By the way, if you do decide to feed your shrimp in the smaller jar, I highly recommend a wafer or something you can remo...

Re: My Opae Ula Is Having Babies

Hello, I'm just curious; how often do you feed them the spirulina tablet and do you remove it after a certain length of time or just leave it in there because the whole thing gets consumed?
