Black algae in cycling tank

Hello everyone, I have been cycling a new tank for my shrimps. I did what I always do- Cleaned the jar with boiling water Cleaned all tools with boiling water Rinsed sand (that I have previously used in another tank) with boiling water Got barnacles as decoration- boiled in a pot for 5 mins I added ...

Re: Power Outage :(

I don’t know for sure how cold it got, but I would guess it was in the mid to low 40’s. Neighbors said that when they went back to check on their house a few days later, their dog’s water bowl was completely frozen. I’m glad I was able to come back when I did cause they wouldn’t have survived much l...

Re: Power Outage :(

I wanted to update that I placed the tank by a heater, and added a tiny bit of hot water to bring up the temp quickly, and four hours later... THEY STARTED SWIMMING! I couldn't believe it. I think there were a few casualties, but for the most part, the majority survived. I am looking into a generato...

Power Outage :(

Hi everyone, I live in Portland (OR) and we’d had a a blizzard here. Two of my neighbors trees fell and knocked out the power. I had to leave the house in a rush and wrapped the tank with a wool sweater before leaving. The roads are not as icy today and I went back to get them and they are all at th...

Re: Casualties :(

UPDATE: I left the shrimps in the bowl I put them in to rescue from the harmful tank, while I was waiting for the re-set tank to become less cloudy. Yesterday, I went to transfer them into the cleaned tank and found another dead shrimp in the temporary bowl. I have no idea what caused it, as the wat...

Re: Casualties :(

Vorteil - I didn't think about the plastic plants. Good speculation, I should remove it. About half the shrimps were dying (laying on their backs slowly moving their little legs) but I was able to get them out in time to a bowl and they bounced back, except for the one who didn't make it. I am worki...

Re: Casualties :(

Thank you for your responses! Dch48 - that's a great idea, I will drill a few holes in the top. JDillon - The tank only has a few dragon rocks, plastic plants, and some black sand (not live) -all were boiled and rinsed prior to the tank set up. I let the tank cycle for nearly 4 weeks before adding t...

Re: Casualties :(

UPDATE: One confirmed death :( I was able to catch 5 and put them in a temporary bowl, and did a water change as an emergency measure for the remaining 4 shrimps that were too quick for me to catch. The plan is to get the remaining 4 out of the tank into the quarantine bowl, and boil everything in t...

Re: Casualties :(

Thank you for the response, SuperProofer. They have been on their backs for 2 hours now (since I've noticed). I am keeping an eye to see if they bounce back (or get eaten  ). The only thing I can think of is that the cleaning lady was here yesterday, but I had the lid on, and a post-it note to ...

Casualties :(

I set up a second tank in August and let it cycle for several weeks. When there was a visible biofilm I ordered 10 shrimps and added them to the tank (exactly a month ago). The shrimps were doing great and I found multiple molts shortly after, but today I noticed 2 shrimps on their backs, dying. The...

Re: How to safely relocate shrimp in ecosphere?

Ummm you don't need much, a cup maybe? I added the water to the bowl to soften the blow to the glass, but also so that once the sphere broke they had enough water to swim in for a minute until I got all of the glass shards out and poured them into the tank.
Good luck! :)

Re: How to safely relocate shrimp in ecosphere?

hi kelseylynn0725, I did the exact same thing so don't feel bad. Fixing it made me feel better and gave them a much better life. I set up a tank following Mustafa's step by step, and let it cycle for 3-4 weeks until algae appeared on the water surface. I read that some people broke the seal, but min...
