Re: Hawaiian Volcano Shrimp

Well, problem solved. The secret is simple. The distilled water I bought (because David at fukubonsai suggested it for his 5 gallon tanks) wasn't so great- acidic pH , just what opae ola don't favor, would've had to mess with it to get it rignt. The solution: new water source. Water from a limestone...

Re: Hawaiian Volcano Shrimp

Thanks for the sand input  Okay, I just tested my water (will be used in the making of the tank) and was surprised to see that it is on the acidic side- between 6.2-6.8. The place I'm getting the shrimp from reccomends that the pH be more akin to 8.0. Any suggestions on how to best raise th...

Re: Hawaiian Volcano Shrimp

Well, I'm finally getting around to starting this tank, getting the components together. Picking a substrate and I think I'll go with sand (I seem to remember hearing that opae ula could get stuck under gravel and crush themselves- or maybe that was only brine shrimp. Damn, it doesn't matter, sand l...

Re: Hawaiian Volcano Shrimp

Thanks for the info :-D
PS: are you using nerite snails or some other kind? Those were the first ones that popped up in my search for brackish water snails. Apparently the people at fukubonsai use pipipi snails.

Re: Hawaiian Volcano Shrimp

Okay, I found some more info on cycling, but it sounds a little... "weird." Let me see if I got this straight: One site highly reccomended "fishless" cycling in the following manner: either a.) dropping a few fish flakes into the tank every 12 hours or b.) dropping a piece of raw...

Re: Hawaiian Volcano Shrimp

Well, I did more digging into the archives and answered two of my questions: apparently these guys actually don't need water changes (! sweet :-D !) and the way to start cycling is to get some "filter gunk" from a store ("please, store manager, can I have some filter gunk?"). Gro...

Hawaiian Volcano Shrimp

Hello there, it's been a long time since I considered starting the shrimp hobby. I recently gained a renewed interest when I saw this clip on YouTube of a guy's 5 gallon Opae Ula setup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZoYFFm4_9c Now, because these shrimp are the abused EcoSphere inhabitants (and the...

Concentration camp, eh? That doesn't sound good... What would you say are some of the most obvious things wrong with the setup (realize I know very little about shrimp, just starting to investigate it)? Just looking I notice that the size is small, there are no filters and no suggested water changes...

Shrimp Setup Question

While browsing the web I found this site selling a setup for Hawaiian red shrimp ("opae-ula") and I noticed that the care requirements and the overall setup looked quite minimal (feed and add water once in awhile). I was wondering, is this really an acceptable setup? I know these shrimp ar...
