Re: Orconectes Lancifer The shrimp crayfish

If I was to contact the state to inquire, I would probably come up with a story that I wanted to catch some crayfish and keep them in an aquarium to grow my own bait for fishing. You might just have to get a fishing license which is generally very cheap and will cover you if someone asks when you ar...

Re: Orconectes Lancifer The shrimp crayfish

Just a note on keeping "wild" crayfish. As invertebrates, the laws that apply to fish generally do not apply to crayfish unless they are a protected species (and the vast majority of species that should be protected are not). In most states you should be able to collect crayfish as fish ba...

I don't have any of the species descriptions available right now, but I can offer these diagrams from the illustrated checklist. They can be very helpful for ID purposes.

Hope this helps some!

Hardiness of Red Ramshorns snails

We are in a severe drought here in Alabama and are under strict watering restrictions. However, my wife is an avid gardener and cannot stand to watch many thousands of dollars worth of plants die. So we have begun recycling all of the fish tank water and are also collecting our shower water in bucke...

It also can't hurt to try dropping the temperature down a bit. They are very hardy and thrive at lower temps. I don't heat my cherry tanks and they reproduce like mad.

I don't know exactly where you live, but there are plenty of scrub oak species living along temporary creeks and such in the desert southwest of the U.S.

I have a community fish tank which has a few red cherry shrimp coexisting with quite a few various small to medium fish. These shrimp were inadvertently transferred when moving some plants. Although my fish do not tend to eat the adults or larger juveniles, I almost never see any baby shrimp in that...

Species and sub-species: It should be simple, but the definition of a species is one of the most difficult things to describe and it is something that biologists and taxonomists continue to argue over and they probably always will. This argument has even been given a name: "the species problem...

Newjohn, I'll do my best to provide this information from my perspective as a biologist. I'll need just a little bit of time tonight to put it together. Until then, I will offer an excerpt from a paper I wrote a year ago which had one short section on larval development of shrimp. I can provide the ...

If it would be possible to place a ruler next to these little girls next time you take photos, I'd love to get an estimate of the egg size.

Great pics!
