Re: Orb-shells (sphaerium corneum)

The aquarium has no heater as such, so just goes up and down with the room temperature. During the day when the light has been on a while it has reached 86F, but not for extended periods. By the next morning it will always be back below 80F ,even during the summer here.

Re: Orb-shells (sphaerium corneum)

It's impossible to see what's going on, as the tank is naturally planted and never siphoned. They live in the six year accumulation of mulm on the substrate rather than actually in it. This corresponds with the highly anoxic habitat in my ponds where I originally collected them. The really fascinati...

Re: Orb-shells (sphaerium corneum)

Six years too late, but here's an update on the Orb shells.

To my amazement these little critters have not only thrived, but have bred like crazy in my tank. They now cover the bottom with an incredible density, at least one per square inch. 8)

Re: Cardinal shrimp antics

:?: I would love to see a few pictures of a Berried Female :?: Unfortunately mine are in a tank that is end on, and they spend most of their time towards the back. I'm struggling to get any good pictures. From the naked eye its very difficult to see if any are berried. Although some do look slightl...

Re: Cardinal shrimp antics

Hi John, When they arrived they were only about 7mm, but now after a molt they are more like 9-10mm. They were quite dark to start with, but now they have become brave enough to venture out into the open the colour is every bit as good as a marine blood shrimp. The best bit though has to be their pu...

Re: Theodoxus - my love

One of the things I like about Theodoxus is the way their population is limited by the availability of algae. Mine breed like mad until the glass is spotless.......the self limiting snail... perfect. :D

Re: Cardinal shrimp antics

Hi John, The price nearly killed it for me too, but now that I've had them for three weeks I don't regret it. Thankfully they settled in fine and have all gone through at least one molt. Despite the size they are much more interesting to watch than all of my other shrimps put together. Now all I nee...

Cardinal shrimp antics

I've just been watching mine and they appear to be using their antennae as some sort of signaling device. They seem to be almost waving at each other from different parts of the tank. When one comes out from hiding it appears to wave at any individual it sees. This then waves back in turn. Has anyon...

So, let's all be responsible. We need to establish captive populations of these shrimp (and others). Let's all be honest to ourselves and evaluate if we really have enough experience with shrimp to tackle the job. It won't hurt to wait a little until captive-bred shrimp are offered for sale. It's g...

These parameters seems to be no problem in this species. In the Towuti, Mantoano and Poso lakes you can find pH values between 7,4 and 8,2; the conductivity is at about 224 µS and the total hardness at about 6°DH. Thanks Werner, Thats really good news for the future here, as thats pretty close to m...

Now a couple of selected breeders had to try to breed them successfully because picking them out of their natural habitat for aquarium porposes ist not a very good idea. Truely outstanding......the future looks bright. Is there any info regarding the water conditions required for these yet? ...
