Atyopsis molluccensis on television

Be sure to check out the Planet Earth documentary currently being shown on the Discovery Channel. They are re-running it all the time and the episode on "Fresh Water" has some video of these shrimp feeding in the first few minutes of the episode.

Newjohn, you are right on track with your definition of a subspecies as a population which has been separated from the parent species by geographic or other barriers. Biologists argue a LOT about the definition of a species. Some want a new species description for every slight variation, while other...

I do like this food because it does not disintegrate quickly and is easy to remove if left uneaten for too long. As for the ingredients, I agree with Mustafa that it is nothing more than generally decent fish food. It does have the benefit of not having any copper ingredients.

I have one scientific paper reference suggesting that their life span is 1.5-2 years, and these deaths are occurring in my oldest wild-caught crayfish. So yes, you may be right that they may have reached their natural maximum age. If this was occurring with my younger captive raised crayfish, I woul...

Saw another one like this last night. It survived the molt but was left with only one leg and almost certainly won't survive. Several other molted exoskeletons were observed as well as two instances of mating. I checked the basic water parameters (pH, nitrate) and nothing was unusual (ph=7.1, Nitrat...

Molting deaths

I've seen this occur a couple times in the past 2 months. One of my very oldest C. diminutus will die part-way through the molting process. It appears as if the claws and all of the legs do not make it out of the old shell and get ripped off of the body. The crayfish does make it out of the front ha...

One thing we need to remember is that the color of many crayfish is not a permanent condition. Often, there is both a genetic element and an environmental element at work. Environmental conditions can induce crayfish to display different color patterns. Many of us have seen this when we have move cr...

Planaria are just the most commonly recognized member of the phylum Platyhelmenthes (flatworms). There are countless forms that do not have the exaggerated triangular head we associate with planaria. This is definitely a mass of flatworms feasting on the dead body. When I taught a biology course, I ...

I'm with badflash on this one. I never use ferts of any kind. Shrimp and snail poop along with a quality substrate like Fluorite works wonders in my planted tanks. Even my crypts grow big and strong and healthy with no additional ferts.

and I don't even know if stresscoat really does anything for fish either. Fish produce their own slime layer on their skin and a bottle of aloe vera gel really is no substitute.

Just stick with Prime and you'll have all your bases covered for chlorine/chloraminie/heavy metal treatment.

These things scare me.

Because they reproduce asexually, they have incredible potential as an invasive species. Just one getting loose and into a local waterway could spell disaster for native crayfish species.

My "red" ramshorns have somewhat translucent tan colored shells. Their bodies are peachy-pink.

Are these considered "red"? They could certainly be more red. . . .
