Hey, not trying to scare anybody, but is there any chance that flash photography might somehow hurt the animals? I know some aquariums don't allow it, supposedly for the sake of the animals. But I don't know exactly what could be the effect of a sensitive animal being subjected to flash photography,...

I hear many people say they are shy and hide a lot, or that they are frightened when the lights first turn on. If yours turn out to be this way, give them some leeway and not disturb them too much while they settle in (of course it would be true of all shrimp anyway, in this regard). One of the thi...

Well I'm quite sure an adult can survive salinity in the water. The question is whether eggs will hatch in those conditions. Anyway, I haven't got plans to try it, myself. I finally did a formal count of my PL's, and there were more than I thought in all that grimey growth. Ended up with 33... I'm s...

Adult females usually have blue claws too, but they are clearly shorter than the males' claws. If your animal's claws only add 3 inches (outstretched) to a 6 inch body, I would say it's a female. OTOH, healthy females are usually ovulating regularly by that size, and you can't miss it when they have...

Might be right about the brackish thing. But I haven't had the pleasure of reading any really reputable works on the natural behavior of C. japonica. If they are found in greatest numbers in marshes, it's possible some may go closer to brackish water at times. I know berried M. rosenbergii do. Many ...

looks like a nice tank. Ghost shrimp don't seem to "hit it" as readily as Cherries and Amano do :!:

I had Ghost larvae once, but they didn't make it

Hey, I have 3 individuals in a lab at UH who I've kept in freshwater since last December. They seem to have taken to it well, however even after a year I guess it's hard to say how their long term health is affected since these shrimp have such long life spans. They're in with duckweed (which they l...

My biggest peeve with these is getting a good hatch. Seems as if the female will eat her eggs or babies because I usually don't get a huge batch to move over to salt water. Either that or the babies just don't survive long in freshwater (but people have always said they last in FW for at least 5 day...

Hey! Welcome to the board, Dr. Sam. I really liked Fuku-Bonsai's report on you and your opae. I tried to set up a tank like yours but haven't had any reporduction. The opae grew quite large (over a full cm), but also developed whitish insides. I figured there was a water chemistry problem caused by ...

I know that when doing M. rosenbergii larvae, turning off aeration is a complete detriment. C. japonica may not need as much, but I would think you'd be hard-pressed to sustain any high density of larvae with no aeration, unless maybe under continuous lighting. If turning off the light, it would def...

I've seen that my tetraselmis does fine at 30 ppt, but nanno takes awhile to start thriving in that salinity and prefers 20ppt or so. In any case, your method should do fine because generally it's not necessary for the greenwater to thrive inside of the larval rearing container... as long as the rot...

Wow, there's some interesting inverts at that source too. Here are mine: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/sept2002/breeder.htm Very good article on culturing them http://www.lfscultures.com/cultures.html For wet live cultures. A small culture should be enough. I've only bought copepods from th...

I just had my first successful Amano metamorphs. My experience is much closer to what the original poster in this thread described than to the Mike's Machine write up, in that it's kind of like the less you do, the better chance of success. I didn't lose my larvae and discover PL's later, but my car...

With an average overflow filter, an individual can be housed in a 10 gallon for a long time. My professor who is an expert of M. rosenbergii biology does this.... however it clearly isn't an ideal living space. About a square meter would be much better for an individual large adult male. Growth shou...

I may have had an algal overgrowth in my outdoor tank. Maybe the water lost too much Oxygen overnight, because one day I noticed everything had just dropped dead.
