Crayfish molting about every 7-8 days, planaria question

I have some smaller crayfish, which appear to be juvenile O. virilis. After having them about 6 weeks, and feeding them regularly, both crayfish molt every 7-8 days. This surprised me that they molted that much. OTOH, they DO appear to be juveniles, and they are eating a lot. I feed them 1 shrimp pe...

Crayfish molted and ate whole shell!

I have 2 (likely o. virilis) crayfish in a 10g tank. The larger one molted the other day. He is about 6" head to tail. After about 3 days I noticed his exo was gone. He must have eaten it. I didn't know crayfish ate the shell to recover nutrients from it. I did know hermit crabs did that. Has a...

It seems to me that any organism that makes eggs needs extra calories and extra nutrition. And I seem to recall that most shrimp do not use algae as their primary source of nutrition.

My guess is your female shrimp did not like the algae, they needed other nutrition, they didn't get it, and died.

I think you're right

And I found the pic of O. virilis on the web. Here it is. Note this matches the smaller cray I have complete with orange-tipped claws, and red between the tail segments and on the end of the tail.

Nobody wants to take a guess at these? I'm wondering if they are prawn (freshwater shrimp). Their claws are awfully small for crayfish, compared to many of the other pics I have seen.

I caught 2 crayfish from a stream and keep them in a tank which hovers around 78F. I measured their stream a few days ago at 76F. I also have in the tank 2 ghost shrimp, had 1 goldfish (moved to new tank), 2 blacknose dace minnows (about 4" long each). I kept the crays fed well and they didn't ...

Stream temp

I measured stream temp. Keep in mind the air temperature has been 88-95F for several weeks. Anyway, stream temp in bottom of wide area (about 10" deep) was 76F. Tank hovers around 78F and the crayfish appear ok, though they both have molted twice in 4 weeks. I have been feeding them lots though...

Stream depth

Stream depth of this stream is shallow for miles around, about 1-2". It's a city stream that runs through very built up subdivisions. The city commission just happened to keep the stream instead of filling it in. So the stream goes underground sometimes, in cement tubes. I'll keep that in mind ...

ID 2 crayfish

This is the first crayfish. Both found in SW Michigan, in a small stream with lots of string algae. They were found in a widening of the stream after a culvert (Cement drain tube) in a city park. Claws have orange tips. Notice dark and light markings on thorax. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b129...

Breather bag production stopped

I thought this was important enough to people who ship animals, that I post this here. Original thread at: http://www.petfish.net/forum/index.php?board=28;action=display;threadid=33096 Here's the message: ------------------------------------------------------- I contacted Kordon about the rumor they...

Lowering pH

I can't remember. Is a higher pH acidic or basic? I know 7.0 is neutral.

Also, how would one lower pH in a 10g tank from 8.0 to 7.0? I'm thinking of doing this.

Next, do sea shells (from craft store) lower or raise pH? Or perhaps have no effect? I have 1 shell in my 10g tank.

pH change forces molt?

Could a pH change from 7.0 to 8.0 force a molt? Whenever I bought ghost shrimp or put crayfish in my tanks they molted within 7 days.

Just want to know in general if a pH change of +1.0 could make inverts molt.

More info

For caves, I did cover some 4" PVC with aquarium sealant and sand, but took it out, thought it might have to do with killing all my ghost shrimp. It seems though that my pH was the problem with the shrimp, as most pet stores keep their tanks at 7.0, my tank was at 8.0 and that's 100 times diffe...

Orconectes virilis notes

I got 2 O. virilis from a stream about 2 weeks ago. Here's my notes and setup for them: They are in a 10g tank, no heater, but with bubbler and HOB filter, sandy bottom. pH about 8.0, hardness about 800, nitrate and nitrite almost zero. Temps around 78-80F, sometimes up to 82F. I know crays like coo...
