Sounds like fun. At that size, you could make a cage for the fish and contain them to a certain area, perhaps only to the water column. As fry get larger they would just need to be netted and put in the cage. I wonder if the shrimp would learn not to go in the area of a cage like that containing a b...

I would be interested in seeing if you see a difference in production level between the three types of shrimp. I wonder if minami numa ebi and red cherries have a difference ... supposedly the same species, right? How is the water there in Tokyo? How's the hobby? I have been considering trying to mo...

I'm still in the easy stage. They hatched out between last Monday and Wednesday, so they're about 5-6 days old. Supposedly they'll live that long in freshwater. I haven't been able to tell for sure if they've been eating the microalgae, egg custard, or artificial rotifera that I've been adding. I wo...

I hope you can be successful. I'm worried mine will fail but they are fine for now. I have half of mine in 32 ppt, and half in 25 or so. That seond half of the hatch, I'd intended to take them to 32 too. But I thought I'd experiment and leave them there for awhile. I should have kept them at 17 ppt ...

Hmm. Judging by their quite strong upstream rheotactic tendancy, I would think they are inclined to climb past the marshes and into streams moreso. Perhaps they are a species that migrates closer to the sea for larval release(?)... wonder if their larvae do fine in a rough rocky downstream migration?

Hey, congratulations on your new arrivals. I'm just starting on my first batch of these, so can't give you anything definite. I'm going to try to feed them live algae culture, enriched egg custard (EEC), I have some Azoo artificial rotifera, and want to try to get them live rotifers if I can get my ...

They're opae kuahiwi or Hawaiian Mountain Shrimp (Atyoida bisulcata). Hawaii's only native stream Atyid shrimp, and badly declined in numbers on my island. I promised some very nice government stream specialists/researchers (who delivered a group of them to me) that I'd keep them informed if I can s...

Amano Shrimp: Marsh or Mountain?

Does anybody know a little more specifics on where Amano shrimp originate from? Like the exact place in Japan, and whether they tend to prefer or thrive better in marshes (slow/standing water) or mountains (stronger current)?

The apparent shuffling the mother does with the eggs is her letting fresh water move around the eggs to keep them fresh and in healthy condition. But, I don't really believe the eggs themselves are being moved from one place to another. Just keep the tank in nice condition and the adult shrimp happy...

Personally, I think there's no need to feed all those different kinds of things. A standard flake food would suffice, an donce they get use to that as their staple, they'll go for it. I feed Tetramin granules (which is basically the same formula as a standard flake), OSI brand Spirulina flake, and t...

That's interesting. I didn't know any shrimp did that. Nature is something screwy isn't it? :-)

If more hobby shrimp did that, it could be pretty useful. Or, you'd only be able to get large females from exporters. :?

I personally don't know why some importeres might only have females. The others sound like they know more about this. I don't know if it's deliberate or what. All I can think of is that it's a size issue, and when they fish out the largest individuals to export, then most likely they're female. You ...

I guess you must have all females, huh? :? About them eating the eggs, I find that likely too. These shrimp seem to have larger appetites than others. And I wouldn't be surprised if they don't drop the eggs but just take them right off their tails. The eggs are also extremely tiny... each one probab...

This is great news, TKD

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but have you ever tried Amano shrimp? I know they're not the most attractive and gentle ones (though they're not threatening either), but I swear they must be the hardiest algae eating shrimp around.
