Re: Is this the right kind of green algae?

Yes. I started seeing floating larvae after about 15 months. But from June '17 to September '18 I had nothing. See my post below. https://www.petshrimp.com/discussions/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=6414&p=43800 Now I always see larvae floating around and there are always a few 1/4" juveniles out...

Re: Is this the right kind of green algae?

That looks very similar to the algae I have in my 10 gallon tank. Mine has been set up for almost 2 years and I've never fed them anything. I had to get a fleet of snails (3 nerites, now countless MTS - started with 14) to help keep it under control.

Here's a pic.

Re: Am I doing this right?

Maybe take the lid off the tank to let more bacteria in.

After that, I'd give it another week and order shrimp. By the time they arrive you should be all set. Even if you don't see any algae it will probably be okay.

Re: Is it really necessary to cycle a new tank?

I setup the tank totally new... with newly washed and dried substrate, new glass container, some coral pcs... newly mixed bottled distilled water with sea salt to abt 1.012 salinity... added some marimo moss balls... My theory is the marimo helped. I'm thinking even if there was a lot of ammonia, n...

Re: Is it really necessary to cycle a new tank?

Based on your experience, I would say it appears that it's not always necessary. Personally, I'd still want to give it at least a week or two, just to be safe. If I was starting a new tank I'd take some rocks, algae, snails, and substrate from my established tank to speed up the process. In my case,...

Re: Waste produced

Where does all the waste go if you have no filter, as recommended? Excellent question. The answer is nowhere. The excess waste stays in the tank and feeds the algae and bacteria that the shrimp eat. If you have too much algae and the tank starts looking bad, add some snails to help the shrimp eat t...

Re: New set up

I'd drop in the ceramic rings. When I set up my tank I added lava rocks from my freshwater tanks. I didn't have any issues.

The worry is that you'd end up with a parasite or algae that you wouldn't want in your shrimp tank. That probably wouldn't survive in brackish water.

Re: Stagnant water

I think of my tank like a balanced and contained ecosystem. The shrimp create the right amount of waste to feed the algae and then eat enough of the algae that it never gets out of control. (I say that but I did have to add snails to keep the glass clean.) In a standard fish tank, you need filtratio...

Re: Nerite Eggs/Larvae?

Correct. I haven't seen any baby nerites. But I would wager that the eggs are hatching just because (I think) I see less of them. My theory is the eggs are hatching, the babies die, the shrimp and the MTS eat the remains. I also have a lot algae in my tank so it's not always easy to see what's going...

Re: Nerite Eggs/Larvae?

I have 3 nerites in my tank (10 gallon). I see a bunch of eggs, but they have never grown into anything. Some eggs have hatched because there aren't as many as there used to be. My nerites' eggs don't leave rings when they hatch, at least, not that I have seen. I haven't noticed any dead nerite babi...

Re: How to carry opae ulas on a plane?

Does it need to be inspected if you put it in your checked baggage? I'm with Varanus on this one. Why not buy the shrimp, put them in breather bags with a piece of filter foam, pack them in styrofoam, and ship them to yourself? With these shrimp you don't even need breather bags, just leave some air...

Re: Starting from Scratch

I also used Instant Ocean. I figured it to 1/4 cup per gallon (based on the instructions and weight on the box) and then bought distilled water at the grocery store and mixed it up. My salinity came out at 1.012, which is fine. Other recommendations I've seen say 1 cup of salt to 5 gallons of water ...

Re: Starting from Scratch

I would start with 10-20 shrimp, not 150. Part of the fun is watching them reproduce. I got a nerite snail to clean the algae off the glass of my tank.

Yep. That's what I see, a.k.a. ghost shrimp. I'm no expert but the clear appearance and the hump back are the characteristics I'm looking at.

That's great! I'd love to see pictures of the ruppia in your tank.
