Re: Green Stone Shrimp

yes, those look like cf. babaulti 'green' to me. But there are at least several green varieties of shrimp that are probably closely related (if not inter-hybridized) which can be very difficult to tell apart. The red ones are the same variety (green shrimp), just under stress. Many of my green Carid...

Re: Can cherry shrimp naturally mutate into crystal red shrimp?

Could there have been hybrid genes in one of my initial six shrimp that I got two years ago that has taken this long to noticeably surface? From what I understand, and pictures I've seen, the hybrid or wild-type genes are all-or-nothing. Either the entire shrimp is clear with some brown dots (wild-...

Re: Opae Ula

Who says they need/have to eat spirulina? Just spirulina is most likely not nutritious enough anyway. oh, absolutely. You're right, I had only planned on using plain spirulina powder as a supplement, with algae and other natural foods as their main diet. As it is, I give my shrimp tanks only a tiny...

Nevermind, I got that question answered in this thread

Re: Some of my shrimps!

but there are alot of yabbies and marron over there! no kidding  Neon, from what I've heard from Australian hobbyists, most of the shrimp available to them are native. Lots of macrobrachium, especially. They have very strict import laws regarding livestock, so I think pet dwarf shrimp are ille...

Re: New pics of my Opae Ula / Halocaridina rubra / Hawaiian Reds

yes, thank you for the additional info! Much appreciated on this end. I especially found the ones re: feeding and hiding spots very useful. I had already planned on building a lava rock pile by gluing them together, because I had read in the wild that you will see most of them duck in and out of suc...

Re: Opae Ula

They feed like any other dwarf shrimp...they pick off of surfaces. that is what I figured, based on pictures I've seen of them in anchialine pools. They indeed were picking at algae and surfaces just like 'normal' dwarf shrimp I'm used to seeing. display that ability extremely rarely...so rarely in...

Re: Some of my shrimps!

Great photos. Also what type of plants are in the bumble bee shrimp photo? To be honest with you, I really don't know what kind of moss it is. :?: it looks like Pellia to me. Great pics, and beautiful shrimp! YOur English is awesome too, BTW :-D My stepmom and stepsister are from Mainland China (my...

Re: Opae Ula

great pics and thanks for the update. Please continue to tell us more, as you learn it :D One by one they starting swimming upside down and starting to pick and filter feed the surface. It was amazing. later in the evening I noticed them swimming upside down at the top of the tank again. I have hear...

Re: orange shrimp/ crystal red shrimp

hello Jan :) I think you may be a little confused. Crystal red shrimp (CRS) are NOT Neocaridina heteropoda , as they are in the Caridina genus. Do you mean RCS (red cherry shrimp)? Also, I'm afraid to sound like a broken record, but please do a search of the forums for your varieties of shrimp. You ...

that's if you trust your local store to be clean and free of diseases/parasites...
Just something for you to consider.

I personally would prefer to do the work myself to ensure it's safe. But I tend to be obsessive about the cleanliness and health of my tanks ;-)

Re: SQUEEZE MEATHOD

I have been squeezing the filter out of a fresh water aquarium to seed the filer in the brakish water aquarium. I guess the bacteria is just dying since the new tank has salt in it. Is my theory right? yeah, that is more than likely just killing the bacteria because from what I understand, you need...

Re: Surfactant

you can use MTS snails all the way up to full marine. However, they need to be properly acclimated to the salt otherwise they could 'curl up and die' too if plunked from straight FW to SW. They're incredibly hardy, so the change from 0 to 12 ppt might shock them a little but they may recover. I just...

Re: Surfactant

I've found pure ammonia (without added fragrances or soaps/surfactants/detergents) nearly impossible to find nowadays. If I were you, I would just put some snails in the tank. After you do a couple large water changes to remove the detergents, of course. The snails will provide ammonia, and when you...
