Ghosts
A guy on e-bay was selling ghost shrimp for $10 for 100 shrimp. Due to a communications screw-up the shrimp spent the night in the post office and I ended up with only about 30 shrimp making the trip. The good news is that I ended up with 8 good females with eggs which I now have isolated in a singl...

breeding of C. japonica
My experience is with algae, and not breeding of C. japonica, but I can tell you that when the lights go out the algae calls upon its stored sugar reserves and burns oxygen. Algae also effects the pH to an extreme. I have measured pH >11.0 in dense algae cultures. The pH swings and oxygen problems m...

New to cherry shrimp - advice appreciated
My personal experience is that neither cherries or amano try to climb out. They are really small so if they die and you have something like a big snail, or even other shrimp, there will be nothing left in a few hours. Ghost shrimp are huge jumpers. As far as size, I would go bigger, but everyone tel...

malachite green
Malachite green will kill shrimp and riccia, so all plants are not safe. I had a worm infestation in some of my tanks for I took some infested plants and a few ghost shrimp and put them in a tanks with the recommended dosage of malachite green. It killed the worms, the shrimp and the riccia. Malachi...

Feeding for a get-away.
The Ma & Pop LPS that I got my most recent shrimp from was feeding these shrimp some hair algae they said grew in large mats up to several feed wide. The shrimp were eating it. I'm attempting to grow some and this may be something I can toss in to feed them for an extended get-away. I don't know...

Ghosts as Tankmates
I am re-thinking keeping my Ghosts with other young shrimp. I saw one attack and eat a small cherry shrimp. While not really agressive, they will take advantage of a chance too good to pass up. They are omivoires and so won't pass up much. I had them at work cleaning up some black beard algae and so...

Tigers
I will once I re-configure my computer. My laptop crashed and it had all the camera software on it. I have a pro-scope that does a great job, but it needs a PC to work. Only 2 of the 6 tigers lived through the night. I kind of figured that would happen. They bodies on the living ones are yellowish a...

Geting rid of snails
Since I aquired a bunch of ghost shrimp and apple snails, my snail population has dropped to almost nothing. In the tanks where I don't have these guys the grow explosively. I've seen the ghosts actively working over the snails and now I see lots of empty shells. The apple snails seem to eat the egg...

The 3 2" bamboo shrimp I have appear to be all female. Now that I know what to look for, it's back to petco for a male.
Has anyone actually hatched any? I've seen conflicting reports that they hatch as young adults, not as plankton.

Breeding Amanos
Now that I finally have a female, along with about 14 males I see a sudden change in behavior, sort of like in high school when a pretty girl shows up on the playground. Even though she is showing no signs of eggs behind her head, 6-8 males are with her constantly. They aren't doing anything, but an...

Tigers!
Resqued the rest of the shrimp. They do look to be tigers, but they are pretty washed out & milky. I'll wait a few days to be sure. 6 for $10. Hard to pass up.

What to do for the holidays?
Like many people, family obligations will take me away from the shrimp for about 5 days during the holidays. I expect that being away proovides some complications for shrimp. I don't suppose a 5 day feeder exists for shrimp. Can you grow a bunch of green hair algae and toss it in before you go? What...
