Re: Hi I’m new, with water filter questions

I was talking about the Britta filter, but I'm sure others are similar. To find my filter (Kold-Steril), either google it, or check the adds on aquabid. Links to commercial websites are not permitted.

Re: Hi I’m new, with water filter questions

Since nobody said that my counter top water filter water would be bad for shrimp I'm going to experament with it. Unless I get some objections. I bought a new 10 gallon aquarium. I'll fill it up with (counter top water filter) water. Take an aquaclear 30 out of one of my goldfish tanks and put it i...

Re: underground vs. sponge filter.. which works better for you?

If you stick the sunction deep in the gravel, you get very few babies. You slowly churn the gravel leaving it in the gravel. I stop the flow and let the gravel drop every now & then. Let the siphon water settle and give the bucket a good look before you dump it.

Re: in berry with no male?

I've read that iodine helps shrimp/crayfish to successfully molt. Mustafa has thoroughly debunked iodine in fresh water system. Do a search on iodine and you'll see this myth brought up & busted over & over. Fresh water systems are devoid of iodine and no critter that has evolved in fresh w...

Re: underground vs. sponge filter.. which works better for you?

Guba- I have to dissagree with you on the mulm. Mulm is the undecomposed fish wastes and other solid matter that accumulates in the aquarium as a fine, brownish, fluffy matterial. The stuff I'm talking about is slimey and is orange. I have many types of filters. I have ball filters wet/dry type and ...

Re: Halocaridina rubra

If we want to have live rock in the tank should the water be full strength salt water? I also need to acclimate some trumpet snails to the brackish conditions, so that transition time of gradually increasing salinity should grow the appropriate nitrifying and de-nitrifying bacteria as well as the a...

Re: underground vs. sponge filter.. which works better for you?

I'd like to make a few points about UGF's. 1st they have much more surface area than a spong filter, not less. The gravel is the filter and so the surface of each pebble adds to the filtration. The goop under the filter is the beneficial bacteria. Unless it clogs your uptake tube, there is no need t...

Re: oh joy, more crayfish worms... any ideas? (on ID, I mean)

They can ride in on plants (eggs too), or other inverts added to the tank. Proper isolation and decon of new things is the way to avoid this.

Re: oh joy, more crayfish worms... any ideas? (on ID, I mean)

Sounds like crayfish leaches. I don't know a safe way to get rid of them. I do know that at a molt there are a few minutes before they move off the old shell to the new. If you actually see it molt you can remove a clean cray. The leaches will move very quickly after the molt to re-locate the host, ...

Re: Halocaridina rubra

That is the nice thing about these shrimp. Don't sweat the cycling. Set up a saltwater tank about half seawater, put in a sponge filter, a little sand from an active tank and by the time the shrimp arrive, you are ready. You need to understand how tough these guys are. They live in environments that...

Re: Clarkii hatch

The male is no longer with us, unfortunately. He fell victim to a bad molt. He was universally blue all the time. I have a few of his brothers though. Next time I'm shooting pictures I'll get one of him.

She is a full adult about 4.5". Yes about 1/2 are blues. I'll keep you all posted.

I'd say close to 200 babies.

Clarkii hatch

I've got some half blue females I'm breeding to pure blue males to improve the genetics and hatch size. The latest mom is releasing her babies right now. She's been dropping them over the last couple of days. The 1st pic was taken yesterday, the 2nd this morning. The 3rd is a blowup of #2. http://i2...
