Re: Dwarf Hermit Crab

Yeah, hermits tend to be tolerant of salinity changes as most of them live close to the shore where they can be caught in tide pools or other temporary pools. After rains those pools can have very low salinity. I'm just surprised that they can live at those low salinities permanently, or at least fo...

Re: Batophora occidentalis success story

Ahhh, I see! It was most likely spores that came back though as spores can be dormant for a long time before they turn into plants. Yes, this species does seem to be pretty sensitive, but I'm still not too sure to what. Maybe lack of nutrients. Another reason I have not offered them for sale yet...t...

Re: Our Petshrimp Project

Hi everyone! I now have another problem. The snails are reproducing like crazy in my tank. Every time I turn around, I see another baby snail. Do I need to remove the snails and put them into another tank? Since this questions has not been answered, I'll answer it. No need to remove the snails, jus...

Re: Macroalgae Red-brown Growth

The brown growth on your macroalgae appears to be some sort of cyanobacterium. The shrimp usually don't eat much of that stuff, but the snails should take care of it over time. Just don't feed anything until that growth is gone. Is it still there, it's been over two months after your initial post.

Re: This won't be my last stupid question...

What substrate did you use? Is that epoxy coated gravel from the fish store? That stuff tends to "bleed" over time as the epoxy come off the gravel. Not sure if that affects the shrimp, but it may.

That IS a very nice painting, complete with "saddle" and all! :) As for your tanks, the one with the Buddha head in it looks like a hypothetical Atlantis discovery scene...

Re: Too chilly for opae ula?

A heater for a small jar is tricky at best. At worst, you may cook your shrimp. If you could somehow get the apartment into the 50s, that would already be enough for these shrimp long term. They will survive 40s and chug along, but not sure for how long.

Re: Thorax color

If the color is dark like in the picture above, then it's just eggs developing. If it's kinda white or yellowish, then that's the internal organs showing through their shell. Either way, it's nothing to worry about. :)

Re: Overpopulation?

They usually reproduce *more* in larger tanks, so something was not to their liking in the big tank then.

You can also lodge it between two small rocks until it gets bigger and gains more weight to stay down.

Re: Black looking algae?

Is it still there? Yes, it could be some kind of algal/bacterial growth. They come in all kinds of colors.

Probably got damaged/infected somehow and fell off. Their eyesight is not very good anyway, so I doubt that will affect it much.
