I really don't know anything about shrimp, but I know that crayfish do need as much aeration as they can get. Anything that breaks the surface tension is good, but with crayfish it seems that more is better. All of my tanks have at least one airstone, some have as many as six.

TKD, what is the set up in your plastic bin? Perhaps there are too many animals. Quite often crayfish will not come to the top if they can't get enough oxygen, but just lay on the bottom and die.

badflash, I have also noticed that my crayfish do best in my oldest tanks. I have one that has been producing crayfish (not shufeldit) babies for more than 3 years now and it does better than any of my other tanks.

It is great to hear that your babies are reproducing so quickly too!

You're right, pvc doesn't look the best. I even covered a bunch of them with tank sealant and pressed gravel into it to make them look better, but it doesn't hold real well and they end up looking worse.

For my smaller crayfish I use the half inch pvc couplings. You can get them in bags of 10 or 12 for about $2 if I remember correctly. They have about a half inch inside diameter and are about 2 inches long. Since I really don't care a lot for saws and my hubby never cuts the right lengths for me, I ...

The babies look excellent badflash! It would be great to be getting that many babies weekly! I really like the color of your babies too.

I have another female with eggs almost ready to hatch. These things really do breed fast compared to larger crayfish!

Wow! I had no idea they could get that big! That would be awesome! I wonder if they grow larger in the wild than they can be expected to in a tank. I know that is typical with quads anyway. It is great that you know so much about the Hoas. No one else I've ever talked to has told me even as much as ...

Thanks Mustafa, it's great to learn new stuff especially about the Hoas (for me.) It would be grand if we could get a few more of them over from Germany to expand the bloodline. How big is huge to you. They are indeed huge compared to my shufeldti, but small compared to my cherax quads. My mal...

When I was looking through Alabama crayfish to see if I could ID this one I was amazed to see how many white species there are in Alabama! There are some that are specific to certain caves such as the Procambarus Pecki (Phantom Cave crayfish) only found in McKinney Pit Cave in NW Alabama. There are ...

I am probably a strange one out here, but I feed my crayfish 55% crude protein fin fish starter food. It gives the babies a wonderful start on life as well as giving the breeder females plenty of protein to produce babies. The high crude protein diet has drastically reduced the cannibalism in my lar...

Not a lot is known about the Hoa Creek crayfish to my knowledge. When I first got mine in July 2005 they were larger than the babies I now have that were born in September 2006. That makes me assume my adults were/are about 2 years old. I do keep my tanks very warm for optimum breeding conditions th...

I've never known of a way to see a bad moult coming. This crayfish was acting strangely that day because he was sitting out in the open during the day time which he rarely ever did. Bad moults can mean different things. This one's new shell seemed to be stuck to the old one on his head, back and leg...
