I wouldn't bother with those "reef bugs". First, they are salt water micro-organisms that will be unlikely to survive and grow in freshwater. Second, they are really expensive for a small amount. I make my own powdered filter shrimp food by grinding a mixture of high quality flake, freeze ...

I agree with Mustafa that this crayfish is most likely a more common crayfish from a population that has adapted to living in the caves. In this area, the streams in the caves usually flow out of them as a spring, so it is pretty easy for some critters to move back and forth between the caves and th...

Vera, I just have one more photo of this crayfish. This is the sort of species that is best observed in the wild and then left there since it would be very difficult to recreate the cave environment they would need to thrive, but I'll post photos from time to time when I come across something intere...

I have one paper describing the artificial rearing of a Cherax species in which researchers had an 89% success rate raising eggs to independent juveniles. It does have some very interesting photos of the hatching chambers which were made from large barrel 50cc syringes. I can send a copy of the arti...

Mustafa,

Thanks for letting me know that you have observed this before too.

She molted a few days after I first posted about this, but I'll try to get a photo if it happens again.

Cave Crayfish

Just wanted to share a couple of photos of a cave crayfish I observed yesterday deep inside a cave in northern Alabama. This species has eyes but is very pale colored. Without the camera flash, it was nearly colorless. I left the crays where they were found, so I don't have any easy way to identify ...

The closest thing to "slate flakes" for a substrate would be the mixed red and black Seachem Fluorite. It is great stuff for planted tanks and I have it in one of my shrimp tanks. It is not cheap, but it looks great and may be just what you are looking. One warning. Rinse the heck out of i...

Unless you move each new generation to its own tank, you'll lose track pretty quickly. Fortunately, it doesn't really matter much unless it is important enough to you that you set up extra tanks for this purpose.

The tank won't fall apart because the frame will still be there. And there will still be silicone that you cannot get to that glues the glass pieces together. All you will be doing is creating a new stronger seal. You just about can't mess it up. If you or someone you know has just a bit of experien...

ARB, It is a simple matter to replace the silicone and is probably always a good idea with a used tank. Simply scrape out the old with a razor blade and replace with aquarium safe silicone caulk. You can buy the silicone in fish stores specially labeled as aquarium safe. I even believe I saw stuff s...

Great photos and I like your technique for isolating the females to improve breeding success. I know I talked about it in the other thread, but I made a mistake when isolating mine. I did well to isolate them in floating guppy breeder tanks to prevent egg loss due to harrassment, but I didn't provid...
