I have one group of C. diminutus that are kept in a tank with white sand substrate. They appear lighter in color than those kept in tanks with black sand. Instead of a typical brown/red, these crays are generally a light tan color. It sure does seem that coloration of some Cambarellus species is qui...

The sand is the basic cheap play sand from one of those big home improvement stores. I rinsed it very thoroughly and aged the tanks for over a month before moving the crays in. I have also used standard pliers to do the same thing with pots when I was breeding cichlids, so you probably don't need an...

If looking nice isn't that important, you can get a length of PVC pipe and cut it into 2 inch pieces. Press these tubes into the sand at an angle so that one end is left open and the other is closed by the substrate.

In my main crayfish tank which has lots of leaf litter and hiding spots, I estimate that I can only see half of them at any one time. I haven't cleared it out to take a full census, but I notice different ones and sometimes notice a young one that is the offspring of a female I never noticed was car...

Beautiful shrimp, Gabe.

It will be great to have someone like yourself from Japan to share your experiences with these shrimp.

Welcome (although I am already quite familiar with you from other sites too)

I have those limpets too. Sometimes I see my dwarf crays eating them. You can also squish them against the glass to provide some fresh food for shrimp.

I certainly don't see any easy way to get rid of them though. . . .

Change your substrate to Fluorite and your plants will have all the iron they could even need without risking copper contamination.

My most heavily planted tank looks fantastic and I never dose any ferts. My plants get only shrimp poop and whatever minerals they remove from the Fluorite.

Limestone rocks are good and generally safe, but they will buffer the pH above 7.0, so they are out if you want an acidic tank.

I don't know the specifics of the genetics on this one, but this is typical of something called "the founder's effect". When a new isolated population is started from a very small gene pool, gene frequency can change significantly from the original large population. Genes which were not pr...

The ones that I have collected in southern Alabama do not have red bands or spots and look very similar to your shrimp. Mine also reach 2 inches or so in length. I've also found differences between nearly identical looking "ghosts" from populations sesparated by only a few miles and slight...

Have you been able to count how many offspring you have? Any idea how many produced per female?

I used to have one of those old Maxxum 7000's. I had a nice 28mm-80mm zoom lens. It had a macro setting and I used to get good macro shots with it. Focus manually. Darken the room completely except for the light in the tank to prevent any reflections. Do not use a flash through the front glass of th...

No, it is not an Amano, although the reddish brown dots could make someone mistake it for one.
