Re: Newbie with Two Tanks

My bags were always tied very tightly and I had to cut them. You could always transfer them to a container with a lid just for the transporting. Or, before you open the bag, place it in the container, snip off the bare minimum to get it open, wrap the open edges around the edges of the container, sc...

Re: Have 8-year Old Ecosystem Shrimp - Not sure what to do

Looks like more shrimpy babies are on the way! I think that will put the tank above 30 shrimps. But I haven't been able to get a good headcount for awhile. They move around too much. :D

Re: Newby seeking advice

I would still make a covering of some sort. Particulates that can float through the air could easily get between that space.

Re: Have 8-year Old Ecosystem Shrimp - Not sure what to do

My jars have cork lids that are propped open most of the time. I just close them when I'm cleaning in the area or too many people come to the house (never know what might float in) just to be extra cautious. The open top allows for air exchange, so no other air stone or similar device is needed. And...

Re: Newby seeking advice

Plus, without some sort of lid/covering, you'll be more exposed to airborne pollutants finding their way into the tank (cleaning solutions, chemical fumes, etc. that can waft through the air). Just something to keep in mind if you can't find a way to cover it.

Re: 1st time trying a shrimp tank = failure.

If you started completely over (new sand, new decor, new fresh distilled water - not the water from the old tank just change out in portions as you adjusted salinity) then the only thing I can think of is something is getting into the water. Cleaning solutions floating in the air, aerosol spray of s...

Re: Murky Water

One culprit would be the driftwood. It decays in brackish water. Not sure what other conditions your tank could have faced while you were gone. But going forward, follow the instructions here and use aquarium-safe decor and you should be fine.

Re: Have 8-year Old Ecosystem Shrimp - Not sure what to do

Not really. Just note that if the opening of the tank is too small (like in the case of a jar) it will be more difficult to put decor in or take it out if necessary or when rearranging, etc. Also, if you need to get the shrimp out for any reason it will also be very difficult. Other than that, follo...

I'm not knowledgeable enough to speak to them completely, but usually when there's a post like this, people say they are copepods. Do a search on this site for "copepods" and look through the various threads. It may help answer your question and tell you what, if anything, is to be done ab...

A large cork would work for a lid. You can order various sizes online.

Re: Sea Urchin Skeleton disaster.

Hard to tell from the pic but is there any substance to it? Could it be dredged out?

If not, to be on the safe side you could always do a water change; as much as you think necessary.

Re: Moving?

We moved 12 hours away. I just put the tank in a small box and packed it tight all the way around with paper, etc., so it wouldn't tip over and put in on the floor in the backseat (so I could keep an eye on it). Just take a bit of the water out, cover it really well and it should be fine. If it's on...
