Re: Tank Trois!
Yeah the organic matter could really kick start the algae (besides time)! I ordered 20 shrimp to start. This is a 2.5 gallon tank. I think Varanus was right that all the good algae should be present even when not visible. And given the snails and moss ball in your tank are all doing well, it’s...

How's your tank 03amida? Are the moss ball and snails doing well?

Re: Tank Trois!
When I checked the tank this morning, there were more brown algae spots popping up everywhere.

Re: Tank Trois!
Brown algae finally!! Week 6! I took Varanus’d advice and added some spirulina. And I spotted the first tiny spot of algae about 3-5 days later. Today I noticed more tiny spots of brown algae popping up. Yay!

Re: How many shrimp do you recommend for breeding?
That's a very interesting question. We should have a thread for that! I'm curious too.

Re: Is it really necessary to cycle a new tank?
Just because I've had many shrimp die due to high ammonia (back when I knew nothing about them), I'll never not cycle a supershrimp tank.

Re: No longer lurking
Maybe I should try that - I'll use the leftover spirulina powder from 3 years ago before I found this site. Appreciate the advice!

Re: No longer lurking
That’s a great sound plan. Still cycling ^_^, as I see no signs of brown algae. It’s going on week 6. But I have more patience now, it’s good to have a cycling buddy lol.

Re: No longer lurking
Yay, so exciting! These snails are pretty cool. How long are you waiting to place your order for the shrimp?

Re: Waste produced
Are you asking what if your tank grew to 1000 in population, what should you do without a filter? If you let the tank grow organically, I think there is nothing to worry about...whether it’s 1000 or 2000, that’s not a concern since the shrimp won’t breed beyond the tank’s capacity and the mini-ecosy...

Re: No longer lurking
Brown algae always come before green algae. I don’t think air contact has a direct correlation to brown vs green. Light might have more to do with it. But I can’t say for sure how to get more green algae, I think it eventually becomes the dominant one.
