Re: Moving

I think most people just drain about half or so of the water and that's good. If you have any heavy decorations that could fall over and hurt the shrimp, take those out too. As long as you can lift it and the water level is low enough not to slosh out everywhere, you should be good.

Re: OK to skim surface?

Thanks all! I'm still waiting for the net I ordered to come in. Once it's here I'll get on it. They seem fine so far though, so likely not in any imminent danger.

OK to skim surface?

Apparently, my office is very dusty! In my work tank (a jar just under 1 gallon), there's a fair bit of dust floating on the surface. When I came back from lunch today there was a bunch of fine white dust/debris all over my desk; like someone walked on the ceiling tiles or something although I'm not...

Re: Green things on surface of water and bubbling?

Firstly, the bubbles are normal. I'm sure some science-type person can give a proper explanation, but I always figured if they occur when you add water, then they were created because of the water being disturbed and since brackish water is "thicker" than regular water, they hang around lo...

Re: Moving with Shrimp

How big is your tank? I moved from Colorado to Nevada and brought a jar tank. It wasn't big, but I didn't anything to the jar itself (the lid was tight so I didn't have to worry about spilling. If your tank is bigger, draining the water down wouldn't be a bad idea to prevent sloshing over). I put th...

Re: Cycling a new tank

If you follow the directions on this site, you don't need to add anything. Plus, when you're ready to transfer your shrimp into the new tank, you can include the water they came in which will already have the beneficial nutrients they need. It just takes a little bit of patience to wait for the tank...

Re: Mold vs algae?

Lol, no the pictures of the lid were just to show how I put the plastic wrap around the bottom. Mold was already wiped off.

Good to know it won't hurt them though. Thanks!

Re: Mold vs algae?

After a few days, the mold came back. It was still faint in color but if I looked at the lid from a side view I could see the protruding fuzziness that is mold. So, I wiped it off again and then wrapped the bottom of the lid in plastic wrap, tucking the edges up under the rubber gasket to hold it in...

Mold vs algae?

My new jar tank has a bamboo lid (not sure if it's actual bamboo or fake, but it's wood nonetheless). It's been cycling for about a week and I noticed today there were a couple of small greenish circles on the underside of the lid. I assume this is mold from condensation rather than algae. I'm guess...

Re: Newbie with Two Tanks

Shrimp are fine without snails. I've had tanks for a couple of years now and only recently added snails just to serve as a clean-up crew because there was more algae than the snails could keep up with and it was hard to see through the glass. The snails made short work of it and in about 2 weeks, th...

Cool. Thanks. Plus, I'll probably put in some water from my existing tanks to help it along.

Re: Cycle a tank with no light?

Any kind of "led" light would work, right?

Re: Cycle a tank with no light?

OK, I'll see what I can find that will work at my desk. Yes, using distilled water. I had one in an office before, but it was an already established tank before I brought it in, so it had a head start.

Thanks!

Cycle a tank with no light?

Well, not exactly "no" light, but... I'm going to be starting a new tank in my office. But I don't have any windows for indirect light, nor do I have enough plugs available to plug in a light (I think IT would yell at me if I put in another power strip). Is it possible to cycle and keep a ...

Re: Have 8-year Old Ecosystem Shrimp - Not sure what to do

Nothing new since the last round of babies. I think they're finally taking a break. Lol It seems to have leveled off for now, but at least it's thriving again!
