ernopena's Opae Ula Gallery
Here are a few photos of my Opae Ula tank from Feb 2008. Unfortunately, I no longer have this 2.5G tank with breeding population of almost 100. I had to give this up to a friend when I moved from Los Angeles to New York. I followed much of the advice discussed here in the forum, except for the follo...

Re: Aack! Opae Ula hiding?!
It is in their nature to hide. That is what they do. In the wild. It is unnatural for them to be out in bright light out in the open. Give your shrimp a place to hide, and let them hide, and they'll feel more at home and start to act more naturally, and breed...

Re: Plants, Plankton for halocaridina rubra?
Good to hear you've had so much success with your Opae Ula. I wish I still had my tank setup. I had to give my tank to a friend in San Diego almost a year ago because I moved from LA to NYC. Once I move out of my Brooklyn dive loft, I'll setup a new 10 gallon tank. As for your questions: A. I tried ...

Re: Halocaridina rubra reproduction question
In my experience, my opae ula stop breeding when there's no more space for them to grow. My tank is a 2.5 gallon with around 100 shrimp. I had to give away around 20-25 to my friend for the colony to start breeding again. There's definitely enough food, since the back wall is green with algae. And t...

Re: New pics of my Opae Ula / Halocaridina rubra / Hawaiian Reds
Hey, thanks to everyone who emailed me questions. Here's the answers: 1. Yeah I probably should have put a sponge filter in there, but it was too cramped when i first set it up. I will have one in my new 10g setup. 2. I mix my spirulina with a shot full of cold distilled water. Most of it swirls in ...

Re: how do I move my shrimp from an ecosphere to an aquarium
You need to make sure the aquarium is alreadyt conditioned and ready for the shrimp. that means the water is at the right salinity and it's been circulating for at least a week for the biological cycling to begin. Maybe even 2+ weeks if you are using live rock. Once the new tank is ready, just break...

Some people will disagree with this, but in my few months of experience, it isn't the leftover spirulina that fouls up the water, it's the resulting shrimp wastes that do. I think that's the reall reason why it's recommended to feed only a tiny protion that's gone in 1-2 hours. You don't want to you...

Lovely shots! Out of curiosity, where did you purchase your Opae ula? I'm considering a 2.5 set-up featuring the little cuties but don't know where I'd get them locally. PM me, I'd like to ask you a few questions on your set-up and maintenance. :D Thanks... All of my shrimp are rescued from 3 of th...

I bought this 100% spirulina powder from Whole Foods Market in West Hollywood for $19. http://hotlikewasabe.com/misc/opaeula_spirulina.jpg Instead of sprinkling a tiny dash of powder on the surface where the shrimp have to come up to find it, I prefer to mix it in water and get it down to them... I ...

Definitely a damselfly nymph. You should remove it immediately.
