Atyopsis molluccensis on television
Be sure to check out the Planet Earth documentary currently being shown on the Discovery Channel. They are re-running it all the time and the episode on "Fresh Water" has some video of these shrimp feeding in the first few minutes of the episode.

Newjohn, you are right on track with your definition of a subspecies as a population which has been separated from the parent species by geographic or other barriers. Biologists argue a LOT about the definition of a species. Some want a new species description for every slight variation, while other...

I have one scientific paper reference suggesting that their life span is 1.5-2 years, and these deaths are occurring in my oldest wild-caught crayfish. One thing we need to remember is that the color of many crayfish is not a permanent condition. Often, there is both a genetic element and an environmental element at work. Environmental conditions can induce crayfish to display different color patterns. Many of us have seen this when we have move cr...

Planaria are just the most commonly recognized member of the phylum Platyhelmenthes (flatworms). There are countless forms that do not have the exaggerated triangular head we associate with planaria. This is definitely a mass of flatworms feasting on the dead body. When I taught a biology course, I ...
